The woods by Deception Falls National Recreation Area are full of gloriously green deer fern. The fern fronds are of two types: sterile, which have densely packed paired leaflets along the stem; and fertile, with leaflets widely spaced along the stem. These sterile fronds rising above the floor make a transparent lacy green haze above the woods' floor, Here e can see dense patches of deer fern in the foreground, with a moss covered fallen tree in the background. surrounded by tree trunks and stumps

A patch of tiny twinflowers blooms in the shade. The small ( half inch) oval green leaves glisten with rain. The white and pink trumpet shaped flowers are attached in pairs to stems that split in two, one side for each flower. The flowers face down, the corollas end in five lobes. Here the plants are surrounded by mosses, whose yellow green contrasts with the bright twinflower leaves.

This view of the Tye River rushing into a narrow spot shows why kayakers love this area. The crystal clear waters crash over rocks creating lovely white water flowing between heavily wooded banks. Each shore is lined by huge slabs of granite is various shades of gray, plastered with moss and lichens. The woods are mostly moss covered, extremely tall evergreens: hemlock, redcedar, whose understory is full of ferns and huckleberries hanging over the top of the granite walls above the river.

Monty contemplates the scenery on the trail at the Deception Falls National Recreation Area.
