On the #DailyWalk yesterday, I was surprised to see a common milkweed with seeds ready to fly.

At the top of a dried stem, a cluster of milkweed seeds with their silky, white fluff. Behind the milkweed are bare willow trees and the gray and white ice on the pond.

Scarlet Bee Balm (Monarda didyma) isn’t just a flower — it’s a pollinator power plant.

Hummingbirds, native bees, butterflies — all fueled by one vivid red signal fire in midsummer.

Monarda didyma cernunnosfoundation.com/nature

A cluster of scarlet bee balm flowers rises from a garden bed in bright summer light. Each bloom has a rounded, textured central cone surrounded by long, narrow, ribbon-like petals that curl and twist outward in deep red. Slender green stems and opposite, softly serrated leaves fill the frame, their surfaces catching highlights from the sun. The background fades into dark soil and soft greenery, making the vivid red flowers stand out like small flames held above the leaves.

Looks like there is room for willow AND a path. Seems to me that there is a lot of potential here, even if you prioritize bank protection with willow (as you know).

Planning any path should include allowing expansion of water flow when necessary, so you might not be able to use the path during that time.

#NativePlants that are adapted to (seepage) slopes could add stability, some flowers, and increase pollinator appearances.

This bright yellow beauty gets blamed for allergies every fall — unfairly.

Wrinkleleaf goldenrod isn’t the villain. Ragweed is.

Meanwhile, this plant is out here feeding half the ecosystem and looking gorgeous doing it.

So far, the winter of no winter. Buds are getting fatter preparing to leaf and flower. The earliest to bloom is the osoberry (Oemleria cerasiformis), a native shrub. I'm establishing a native growth area next to our driveway. Osoberry is part of it. #PNW #plants #nativeplants #botany #nature #photography #macrophotography
