Hi #Academics,

When you read a paper in your field and disagree with something that the authors did (e.g. interpret results incorrectly) or did not do (e.g. not cite an extremely relevant paper), how do you usually react:

From the "Attention is all you need" paper, one of the most interesting statements of who made which contribution. The author order in the published paper is claimed to be random (but look carefully).

Just amused by this particular solution to the problem of dividing up credit/contributions for a scientific paper.

Text from the "contributions" paragraph in a famous computing paper ("Attention is All You Need."

Complete text follows: "Equal contribution. Listing order is random. Jakob proposed replacing RNNs with self-attention and started the effort to evaluate this idea. Ashish, with Illia, designed and implemented the first Transformer models and has been crucially involved in every aspect of this work. Noam proposed scaled dot-product attention, multi-head attention and the parameter-free position representation and became the other person involved in nearly every detail. Niki designed, implemented, tuned and evaluated countless model variants in our original codebase and tensor2tensor. Llion also experimented with novel model variants, was responsible for our initial codebase, and efficient inference and visualizations. Lukasz and Aidan spent countless long days designing various parts of and implementing tensor2tensor, replacing our earlier codebase, greatly improving results and massively accelerating our research."

Dear colleagues, many of us want to get our manuscripts finished and off our desk before the holiday season. Submission rates massively increase these days. But please also allow the editors and reviewers to have a break. So please do not expect that your manuscript will be screened, forwarded, handled or reviewed during the holidays. Most of us do this on a voluntary basis. Thank you for your understanding!

#France institutional repository of #scientificPublications @hal_fr has announced that it will now allow to collect automatically #openAccess version of papers they list.
This involves #openAlex data and then locating potential files via #unpaywall .

Note for those in France: they're willing to have people test this, notably those who have open access papers not yet in their base.

I found a pretty cool science website, there are tons of free science related pdf's. It's called Research Gate, researchers can join free as well as regular citizens. I've already downloaded some soil biology papers.
