Schoppend en steigerend,
en zonder om te kijken,
en weg is het jaar.

In november, met het einde van het jaar in zicht, zocht ik naar een geschikte haiku voor op de kerstkaarten. De twee bovenstaande haiku’s “overleefden” de selectie. Maar daaruit kiezen bleek nog moeilijk.
Beide haiku’s zijn een metafoor. Daarmee komen ze met elkaar overeen. Een metafoor is een beeldspraak die berust op een vergelijking. In de eerste haiku, vertaald door J. van Tooren, wordt de vergelijking met een paard opgeroepen, vol actie. Schoppend en steigerend en bijna niet te houden. Als je hem zou willen vasthouden zou dat niet lukken.
De tweede haiku, vertaald door Germain Droogenbroodt, is lieflijker. Hier zit de vergelijking in de sneeuwvlokken. De sfeer is ook heel anders dan de actie in de eerste haiku. Hier vrede en kalmte.
In deze haiku’s kun je ook het beeld van de wereld zien. We leven in een onrustige tijd. Er is veel gebeurd het afgelopen jaar en het ziet er naar uit dat dat nog wel even doorgaat. Het oude jaar schopt en steigert zich los en gaat ervandoor. Maar het nieuwe jaar staat ook al onrustig te snuiven en te bokken om het over te nemen. Dit is trouwens wel genoeg beeldspraak over paarden, vind ik.
De rust en vrede die uit de tweede haiku spreekt is iets waar veel mensen wel naar verlangen. Het jaar kalm afsluiten met goede wensen en een vredig nieuw jaar tegemoet zien. Dat zou mooi zijn.
Maar dat lukt niet altijd. Ik zie zelfs bij steeds meer mensen, en bij mijzelf, een heen en weer geslingerd worden tussen actie en rust. Angst en vertrouwen. Heel onrustig dus. Maar als het in de buitenwereld niet kalmer wordt moeten we de rust misschien meer in onszelf zoeken. Handelen als het nodig is. En aanvaarden wat niet te veranderen is. De Dalai Lama zei het al. We kunnen in onze eigen kring proberen zoveel mogelijk vrede te vinden en die verspreiden. En als iedereen dat nou doet, dan moet het toch uiteindelijk goed komen? Het klinkt zo simpel.
En mijn kerstkaartje? Ik heb voor de tweede gekozen, van Issa. De rustige, met de zachte sneeuwvlokken. Aanvaarden wat niet te veranderen is en erop vertrouwen dat het goed is.
