No more #SharkNets - As someone who loves being in the ocean, they need to go.

@davidho.bsky.social Thanks (I think) for reminder - entanglement ghastly enough but jeez. Hardly matters whether these #sharknets protect humans' leisure beaches or catch meat and manliness foodstuffs or...

Is it safe to swim in La Réunion lagoons?
Yes. But ONLY in protected areas. Shark nets exist for a reason. Swim like the locals do. Don’t assume.

More than 90% of the marine animals that are caught in shark nets off the coast of New South Wales beaches over summer are non-target species, including turtles.

END SHARK NETS IN NSW

What started as a misguided attempt to reduce the risk of shark bite for public safety has turned into a drawn-out and devastating force on our #MarineLife. The NSW Department of Primary Industries still deploys #SharkNets at 51 beaches from #Newcastle to #Wollongong every year.

#Dolphins, #rays, #turtles and #sharks are routinely entangled and drown – the vast majority of animals caught are not considered in any way dangerous.

Two endangered leatherback turtles were freed from shark nets off Sydney's Northern Beaches in one day.

"At least 51 beaches in NSW are meshed between September and April to protect swimmers from sharks. Councils have called for shark nets to be replaced with alternatives that do not harm marine life... Around 90 per cent of the animals caught in nets were not target species.

This can’t carry on.

Ditch destructive #SharkNets for good.

Shark nets, and #SharkCulling, do not reduce the risk of shark bite and provide nothing more than a false sense of security. Tell the NSW Government that it’s time to ditch the nets for good and bring shark bite risk reduction into the 21st century.

- Shark nets are indiscriminate, outdated, and ineffective. They have been installed at NSW Beaches for nearly a century,

I swam in the #ocean at Umina Beach yesterday, and I hope to swim there again today - and I say NO MORE SHARK NETS. We don't need them because they don't work and because THEY KILL OUR ENDANGERED WILDLIFE. #auspol #nswpol for nature's sake get rid of those nets.

People in #NSW #Australia

Now is your chance to show your disappointment that shark nets are returning to NSW waters for the 23/24 season.

You can help by sending a fax to the NSW Premier to ask for an end to cruel shark nets. You don't need a fax machine, and it only takes 1 minute to send one using this nifty online tool.

Yesterday, I went to a protest at #Terrigal beach on the #NSW #centralcoast against shark nets. As an ocean swimmer, I am appalled by the destruction of endangered wildlife, including turtles and dolphins and even baby whales who get caught unintentionally by these nets.

The politicians KNOW that the nets are not effective in preventing shark attacks, and KNOW of the 'by-catch' harm they do... And yet... And yet they do not have the guts to back the removal of these nets. Why? Short-term political gain, of course, as in so many other areas; they would rather be in the *wrong* than risk a roasting by a hostile press.

There are jellyfish that I swim with every day that have more backbone. #auspol

End the use of #SharkNets in #NSW

The use of shark nets began as a strategy to cull sharks on Sydney’s beaches in 1937 in a misguided attempt to reduce the risk of shark bite for public safety. The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) still deploys shark nets at 51 ocean beaches from Newcastle to Wollongong every year from 1 September to 30 April.

#SharkNets pose a direct threat to #whales migrating the coast of #Queensland. Since 2001, over 110 whales have been entangled.

In addition, high-levels of by-catch mean QLD’s current shark control program causes significant damage to marine animals.

I ask that the QLD Gov remove lethal shark control measures and adopt non-lethal alternatives. I welcome the ongoing trials of non-lethal alternatives as laid out in the Shark Management Plan.
