I put pen to paper and tried to let my thoughts run wild. I wanted to see where they would take me if I did not rein them in, but under the watchful eye of my conscious mind, they would never stray far, and I could only push them where I had been before, never anywhere truly new.
So I went to the master to ask for advice.

I found her standing on the edge of the garden pond, carefully weighing a flat stone in her hand. When she noticed me approaching, she waved me closer.

"What is on your mind?" she asked. "You seem distraught."

"I can never surprise myself." I said. "My thoughts are so predictable, they bore me."

She smiled, drew her arm back, and launched the stone, skipping across the surface of the pond.

"We are all little stones on our own trajectories across the vast pond of space and time."

The stone hit a rock in the middle of the pond and tumbled, but kept on skipping, albeit slightly more chaotic. When the stone had stopped and sunk, she turned to me.

"We are primed by lots of things to naturally go in a certain direction. Our parents, friends, circumstances, luck and misfortune, but what we can do, that the stone cannot, is choose the rocks we bump into."

She picked up a new stone.

"I have seen you fight with Silvana in the study halls, I want you to find her the perfect present."

I normally vice (and love it) but my #curling club is short on people who want to #skip so I was drafted to skip for the coming 🥌 season. I’ll have an experienced vice and two brand new curlers as lead and second.
