@mekkaokereke
Having to be closed/secret is more difficult to do than doing something destructive openly.

Hypothetical
Want to dehumanise some target group?
How much easier is it to do this openly than to do it secretly?

Say100,000 times easier?

Parallels the reason why absolute propriety must be demanded of judges and elected officials.

But America forgot that some time before chose to put his own interests ahead of his office and lie in court, under oath, while POTUS.

@jgordon @Schouten_B
I think it took Covid for Trump to lose in 2020.

IMO Trump, as skilled as he is at manipulating media and rallies, is pretty much a gauge on the situation not the creator of it. Same as G.W./Cheney being accepted, and folk accepting lying under oath while POTUS.

While cultures are so often very oppressive, the current "you find your true self" culture opens the door to self-obsession, hyper-individualism, and a stunted development focussed on consumption.

@Remittancegirl
I think we can add to the list of those whose excesses and transgressions were excused or ignored.

Separate to that is the apparent paradox of individualism being easily able to destroy self-respect and enable disrespect of those we hold dear. DJT's repeated slurs against those American military killed in war being a high profile example.

Thom Hartmann on #DOJ #OLC #DOJOLC president #POTUS free-criming no-indictment pass: written in a letter by #Nixon’s corrupt DOJ (AG John Mitchell went to prison) when Nixon was being investigated… doubled down on by Clinton’s DOJ when he was being investigated for lying under oath

Thinking that 2016 is the new normal.

And Trump lost in 2020 due to some pandemic.

And in 2024, with some pandemic hidden from sight, the new normal is back on track.

Did pick up on this values-free trend in the electorate early and realise that he could prioritise himself over the office of POTUS and get away with lieing in court under oath?

Having seen the Repub Senators repeatedly decline to convict Trump, I'm not seeing what forces will stop Trump doing worse & worse.
