Trump waarschuwt voor toekomst Navo als partners niet helpen in Straat van Hormuz
In een interview met Financial Times voert de Amerikaanse president Trump verder de druk op om bijstand te leveren bij het vrijmaken van de Straat van Hormuz. Hij vraagt opnieuw aan alle landen die olie importeren via de straat om ook militair te helpen om ervoor te waken dat er daar "niets slechts" gebeurt.

Hij viseert daarbij specifiek de Navo-landen. "Als er geen antwoord komt, of een negatief antwoord, denk ik dat dit erg slecht zal zijn voor de toekomst van de Navo", zegt de president aan de krant.

Trump herhaalt ook zijn eerdere oproep aan China om mee te helpen olietankers in de regio te escorteren. Hij dreigt ermee een eerder gepland bezoek aan China voor onbepaalde tijd uit te stellen, zolang China geen toezeggingen doet. "Uitstel is mogelijk", zegt hij over een eind maart geplande top met Xi Jinping.
