Today we have Apeksha Shapeti! 👩‍🔬🧪Apeksha is a PhD student in biomedial engineering at KU Leuven, studying vascular diseases. She's a truly international scientist and we are eager to learn from her on 29th of June! 🗺 🎉

Photo of Apeksha ShapetiPhoto of Apeksha Shapeti in the lab with the following text: "As a KU Leuven PhD researcher, Apeksha enjoys combining concepts in biomedical engineering, mechanics and cell biology to answer questions about vascular disease. She grew up in India but moved to the US to study Engineering at Cornell University. After 5 years in industry leaping from glass manufacturing in Japan, to microelectronics in New York - she quit her job to pursue her enthusiasm for biomedicine in Belgium. She derives immense satisfaction from community outreach programs in education, scientific communication, and mentoring. Besides her passion for science, Apeksha enjoys being active, writing, art, philosophy, food and Sun."

Beautiful day for #SoapboxScience in #Brighton. Where I leaned I have a palmaris longus, from Prof Claire Smith's session on "your body is NOT a textbook example" (how true that is).

View onto the square on the Brighton seafront where soapbox science is held. Three boxes visible, where a piece of science is being discussed at each one with a small crowd around. Blue skies, and fluffy white clouds.Prof Smith on the soapbox, wearing a costume illustrating human anatomy. She told us the arms have been sewn on the wrong sides. There is a whiteboard showing a tally of who in the audience does and does not have a Palmaris longus muscle in the wrist: 10 do, 6 don't. In the foreground an attractive black and white terrier sits, being a good girl.

We next turn to present Dr. Ana Romina Fox! 👩‍🔬🧪 Ana is a biologist working on aquaporins in plants currently at UCLouvain. Aquaporins are fascinating proteins that enable water to penetrate inside cells. 🧬

Photo of Dr Ana Romina FoxPhoto of Ana Romina Fox in the lax with the following text: "Dr Ana Romina Fox earned a PhD in Biological Sciences in 2013, focusing on how plants respond to light. Subsequently, she conducted post-doctoral research on crops focusing on different topics that affect plant productivity. In 2016, she moved to Belgium to study aquaporins in maize. Returning to Argentina, she continued researching aquaporins in various organisms. In 2022 she received a fellowship to return to Belgium for two years to study aquaporins in plants. Currently, she's investigating how aquaporins affect plant cell structure using molecular biology and microscopes, aiming to enhance farming practices by understanding crop biology."

Our 7th speaker 👩‍🔬 🧪(already!) is Lidia Lopez 🎉
She is a biochemist and molecular biologist 🦠 studying Alzheimer disease at ULB 🧠 yet another intriguing science field that Lidia will unravel for us 🤩

Photo of Lidia LopezPhoto of Lidia Lopez in the lab with a sampling syringe and with the following text: "Hi! I'm Lidia and | study the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). | studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Málaga, Spain, which was followed by a master in Physiology and Neuroscience in Seville. After the first contacts with neurodegenerative diseases during my L bachelor and master final projects, I decided to pursue a PhD on this discipline. 3 years ago, I came to Brussels to work with Prof. Karelle Leroy on tau pathology of Alzheimer's disease. At this moment, we are silencing a protein linked to the tauopathy in AD and analysing the effect on the propagation of the lesions.
