Between Communication, Architecture and Art. Mosaic in Urban Space – the Work of Ignacy Bieniek

Mosaics in urban space: once tools of socialist propaganda, now reinterpreted as communicative, architectural, and artistic media. A case study of Bieniek’s mosaic highlights their social, aesthetic, and historical value—even after destruction.

What does this image of a massive ship have to say about Soviet-era Ukrainian art? Read on to learn more about our new exhibition, opening this weekend. georgiamuseum.org/gmoa_blog/so

A Soviet-era Ukrainian painting of a large ship in harbor, painted in red, green and white. At first, you don't even see the small figure on the dock, but once you do it makes you think about scale and humanity, not just the triumphs of industrialization.

a thing I learned this year: socialist realist art is (or can be)/awesome! if ever you hear someone complaining it's just fascist glorification portraits of Stalin and Lenin, just direct them to Yuri Pimenov

UNPOPULAR ART OPINIONS

- Most of the Impressionists bore me, with the big exception of Degas. Nevertheless, I'd still like to see the Impressionist Moment exhibition that has opened in DC.

- Banksy gives me the pip. I'll have to elaborate on this in a future post.

- Socialist realism does not merit blanket contempt or swift dismissal. Some of it is frightful kitsch, but the whole movement deserves wider exposition and deeper and more discriminating consideration. I am aware of Matthew Cullerne Brown's work on this topic.

A painting of Soviet Union children Pioneers, wearing their white shirts, red ribbons around their necks, and black pants/skirts, marching in a field next to a statue of Vladimir Lenin. The child in front of the marching line is holding a giant red and golden flag, and two children in the back are playing trumpets with red and golden banners hanging from them.

After about a decade of studious procrastination, I am finally reading this epic, and am dragging my book club with me :) #literature #sholokhov #AndQuietFlowsTheDon #socialistrealism

The international arts organization the Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) was set up by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as part of the "cultural cold war." The congress was one of the many ways the CIA tried to promote art to rival the growing popularity of socialist realism. Abstract expressionism was one of the main art movements to benefit from this support. When news of the CIA backing was revealed in 1966, the project collapsed.

Today's Flickr photo with the most hits: this detail from the jolly tiled mural that decorated the building of the former GDR Finance Ministry, in Berlin. (Itself formerly Goering's Air Ministry).

This wouldn't be out of place adorning a public building in Communist Hungary back in the 1970's. Pure socialist realism here in Wellington! It's
the rugby world cup celebration sculpture down at Jack Illot Green by Jervois Quay.

A sculpture relief showing two males rugby players looking upwards and straining their muscular bodies as if reaching for something beyond. The sculpture is a dull, granite colour. There are a few bushy trees in the background at the top right corner.
