"How one consulate worker risked her freedom to save a triple amputee

More immigrants are ending up in humanitarian crises with no safety net. Overworked social workers are sometimes their only saviors.

Saday Osorio Cordoba’s job as the sole social worker at the Colombian consulate in San Francisco has never been what you’d call easy. Her client base spans not just California but Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. According to the latest census, 36,000 Colombian nationals live in these states, but Osorio Cordoba guesses it’s closer to 250,000. If something goes wrong for them, it often lands on her plate.

She helps find Colombians who are missing or trafficked, detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, separated from their families, or are critically ill and desperate to leave the U.S. and return home.

President Donald Trump’s reelection has made consulate work more difficult than ever, especially for those representing countries with large contingents of immigrants in the U.S. Now the workers in these agencies are not only handling passport and visa paperwork but are acting as first responders at the front lines of emergency services amid the immigration crisis."

They are heroes, regardless of how the #orangemenace wants to throw #healthcareworkers under the bus.

#felon47 has also axed professional designation for #socialworkers, which hit me like a ton of bricks. I worked my ass off to get my #bsw and it was the most demanding career for relatively little pay that I ever had.

Social Workers Excluded as Public Safety Personnel

casw-acts.ca/en/social-workers

> Ottawa, ON — November 26, 2025 — The Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) is calling on the Government of Canada to formally recognize social workers as Public Safety Personnel (PSP).

"Without supporting social workers’ mental health, Canada undermines its ability to provide effective trauma responses, not only for PSP but also for their families” concludes Whitenect.

#Trump must release millions in #grants meant to address the shortage of #MentalHealth workers in #schools, a federal judge ruled.

#Congress funded the program after the 2022 #Uvalde #SchoolShooting. The grants were intended to help schools hire more #counselors, #psychologists & #SocialWorkers, & focus on rural & underserved areas. But Trump’s admin opposed #diversity considerations used to award the grants & told recipients they wouldn’t continue past Dec 2025.

#ZohranMamdani on this month's cover of #InTheseTimes! Here's one of the articles from the August/September issue...

Zohran Mamdani's Win Is the Beginning of the End of the Old Democratic Party

Mamdani’s NYC primary victory shows that the old tricks of the political establishment are dying out—and something new is being born.

by Hamilton Nolan, June 25, 2025

Excerpt: "What, exactly, is the scary socialism of Zohran Mamdani that all of the #billionaires are screaming about from their high towers? #FreeBuses. #LowerRents. #PublicChildcare. Higher minimum wage. #SocialWorkers for homeless people instead of cops. Better grocery stores. Ahh! No! Not… not… all of these common sense ideas that the vast majority of NYC residents would be happy for! Anything but that!

"There is a limit to the political effectiveness of #RichMen who have servants telling regular people that their lives cannot be better. We may have reached that limit. The threat of the rich is that they will flee the city. The flaw in their leverage is that almost nobody likes them anyhow.

"Zohran’s campaign was distinguished by its determination to treat voters as adults. When accused of 'defunding the police,' Mamdani took the time to explain that he wants to create a department of mental health experts and social workers to take work off the NYPD’s plate. When accused of #antisemitism, he took the time to forthrightly distinguish that smear from valid criticism of the massacre in #Gaza. He was, often, more adult than the political press covering him, which is trained to treat dishonest attack lines as sporting challenges rather than as things to be dismissed. The youngest candidate in this race acted with the most maturity. The oldest, #AndrewCuomo, ran with the traditional playbook of treating voters like ignorant children — and failed.

"Old people with old ideas do not stay in power forever. Old lies and old tricks do not work forever. Time moves slowly — excruciatingly slowly, if you are always paying attention — but it does sweep away the old husks and bring new things, eventually. #Socialists want more people to have decent lives. Zohran Mamdani is proof that that message cannot be mischaracterized forever and ever. We will look back on this primary win as the start of something new. If America is going to have one lone opposition party to #fascism, that party does not have to suck. The establishment is too deeply rooted to move. So we will run them over."

Reform councillors aged 19 and 22 in charge of children’s and adult services at local authority

Social workers raise questions over clash of values and lack of experience of new lead members at Leicestershire County Council

Concerns are mounting over the appointment of two Reform councillors as political leads for children’s and adults services in Leicestershire.

Joseph Boam, 22, now heads up adult social care at Leicestershire County Council (LCC), and Charles Pugsley, 19, who is still at university, has been made cabinet member for children and family services.

The pair were appointed following the local elections in May, and are responsible for multi-million pound budgets.

I get about one email per day at work (I work for a US state) telling me that flags are at half mast for a deceased police officer. I'm all for honoring heroic actions and lives, but I've looked many of these folks up and they are most often deceased from heart disease, unnamed illnesses, or sometimes traffic accidents while getting groceries. A few have died directly from the actions of their job, like an officer who recently died from what was probably long-term health effects from being a rescue worker at the 9/11 site in 2001, but there's no distinction between "died in the line of duty" and "just died like every other human will".

If cops get a statewide expression of mourning no matter how or when they die, I want the same treatment for every K-12 teacher and every state-funded social worker. I can guarantee they've done at least as much good for the citizens of the state as police have, and many of them (especially social workers) have been in just as many dangerous situations as the average cop.
