Given the state of the world I feel as if I should be growing food on every available piece of the plot, but I couldn't bring myself to pull up these opium poppies just yet. I'm rewarded by watching the antics of bees and hoverflies squabbling over access to the pollen.

A wooden edged raised bed full of bright pink opium poppies. In the foreground is a row of feathery fronds of fennel and bush bean plants. A single pot marigold plant stands out with it's bright orange daisy flowers. Behind the poppies is a row of heritage Carlin peas with pods developing.

Network rail are carrying out emergency repairs near our allotment site and have been given access via the site. The work is essential but has caused quite a bit of disturbance and has been dragging on. Spoke to one of the contractors today and it turns out that we have newts AND doremice on the allotments and they were the cause of the delays. I did a little happy dance!

Love this idea that I spotted in the walled garden at Wakehurst in Sussex. A teepee of hazel stuffed with the dead top growth of the surrounding herbaceous plants. This allows the gardeners to tidy up in late autumn but still provides habitat for creatures.
A great solution for tidy minded gardeners.

India has one of the richest and most diverse wildlife in the world. It is home to 8% of the global biodiversity on just 2.4% of the land. But it also faces many challenges, such as population growth, development and climate change.

Snakeshead Fritillary in our no mow patch of lawn. This area is one of my favourite things in the garden. Even last year through the drought it remained green. It's also the fav worm hunting area for our resident blackbirds.

I made a pond at the allotment. Only just over 1 metre square and about half a metre deep but hoping it will be useful for wildlife. Just need to find something to edge it and ask around to see if anyone can provide me with some water from their pond, to seed the biology.
