A big problem is leaky #swimdiapers and #kids sucking up recirculated water.
Between 1997 and 2022, splash pads across the country were linked to at least 60 outbreaks, with the largest sickening over 2,000 water frolickers in one go. In all, the outbreaks led to at least 10,611 illnesses, 152 hospitalizations, and 99 emergency department visits.

Report highlights danger of splash pads for waterborne diseases

A study today in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that probed waterborne pathogen illnesses linked to splash pads in the United States since 1997 found that while chlorine is an important disinfecting agent, it does not eliminate Cryptosporidium, which is the most common cause of waterborne disease outbreaks associated with the playgrounds.

Years ago when I was in public health, this was a real problem, and not just due to humans. We learned that deer caused issues on splash pads at night...When the splash pad was activated the next day. Voila! Aerosolized deer poop...Not kidding.

Needless to say, you can figure out why I've avoided public pools too.
