While updating Wikipedia about tomorrow's new motorway — Victoria's getting an "M4" — noticed some unhealthy obsessions about a long-gone politician

"The project was initially costed at $5.5 billion with just $400 million of taxpayer investment, but that has since blown out to $10.2 billion with the state chipping in $4.2 billion."

Transurban has brought itself $40 billion in extra tolls on CityLink for only $6 billion and pushed the cost overrun almost entirely on to the tax payer.

The state government got completely screwed.

Screenshot from The Guardian liveblog:

Christmas will come early for the 42 newly graduated students who achieved the perfect score of 99.95. The average Atar for this year’s students is 69.48, slightly lower than the 69.52 average of the 2024 cohort.

Boys scored an average of 68.60, girls achieved 70.20, and the average Atar for gender-neutral students is 72.40.

Fucking Exxon Mobil. Not content with fucking the world, decided to get Hobson's Bay Council (who happily obliged) to evict a dozen poor people stuck living next to their planet killing plant, because they made an odour complaint 3 years ago.

The residence fought back, and won.

They should now sue the council, and report them to IBAC:

RE: mastodon.social/@ptua/11568820

The state government is now collecting the fares instead of the operators and paying the operator a fixed fee instead of the operating getting the fare revenue. Classic failing public-private partnerships.

"The average Melburnian contributes 21¢ per weekday to the cost of climate change, but the amount varies widely, from less than 4¢ for people in parts of Carlton and Docklands with the best public transport and walking connections, up to 58¢ in car-dependent Bacchus March."

Transport Victoria are expanding tram stops on the 57 tram line along Victoria St, Errol St and Queensberry St in North Melbourne and as a big fuck you to the disability community they're not making them accessible.

They're making the tram stops wider and adding zebra crossings but for some reason they can't be fucked rising the stop to the level of the tram to provide level boarding.

This is fucking outrageous.

Transport Victoria needed to make all tram stops accessible by 2022 and they failed to do that. The next deadline is only a few years away and they're planning to rebuild trams stops without making them accessible.

If you're in Melbourne please submit feedback on this consultation and tell them you support accessible tram stops.

You can also email Sonya Kilkenny the Minister for Planning and tell them you support accessible tram stops.

reception.kilkenny@transport.vic.gov.au

They are also doing in person consultations on Saturday and Tuesday if you want to yell at them in person.

A rendering of the new tram stops, they are 'safety zone' style tram stops in the middle of the road and a fence between the waiting area and the car traffic. There are zebra crossings to access the stop. The stop has everything that would make it an accessible tram stop except that it's not raised to the level of the tram to allow level boarding.A Street View of the current 'safety zone' style tram stop, it's also in the middle of the road with a fence between a very narrow waiting space and the traffic.

About time they did this. Not requiring car parking will reduce the expense of building apartments, it's a good idea.

"Across the inner city, up to 40 per cent of residential car parks now sit empty, according to the state government. Developers are forced to go through lengthy planning processes to get permission to reduce car parking requirements.

"Under the new changes, apartments in areas deemed well serviced by public transport will have no minimum parking requirement."

"We’ve set a target for 25% of trips to be made by active transport by 2030..." ( climatechange.vic.gov.au/__dat )

Victoria’s Climate Change Strategy includes 25% of trips being made by active transport by 2030.

The strategy talks about how 60% of trips are less than 5km and could easily be done by bicycle or walking.

But we haven't seen much progress on this at all. In 2005 14% of trips were by active transport compared with only 16% in 2024.

Walking makes up the majority of these active transport trips with trips by bicycle making up only a few percent. The problem is that all of these walking trips are less than 2km and it's very difficult to entice people to walk further because walking is really slow.

The only way to significantly increase the amount of active transport trips is to prioritise bicycle infrastructure for short trips.

Sadly there has been very little investment in bicycles infrastructure, especially bicycle infrastructure for short trips. Most bicycle infrastructure investment has gone in to supporting long commuting trips where it's expected that people are riding their entire commute in to the CBD with almost nothing supporting shorter trips to local shops.

Getting this done in the next 4yrs will require a huge increase in the budget for active transport.

Hanson, in her speech, told the crowd she wasn’t from Victoria and that she “wouldn’t move” to the state.

Asked by host Raf Epstein what she made of Hanson’s comment, Alllan replied:

"Good. That sort of division is not welcome here. That sort of divisive politics has been rejected by the Victorian community"

I don’t much like the state Labor government (too many careerist party hacks), but the people would need to be convinced the opposition LNP is a safe pair of hands before they vote for it; and let's face it, the LNP is a rabble. Vote Greens, IMO.
