Why I Ignore The Spotlight as a Staff Engineer - Lalit Maganti

"The tech industry loves to tell you to move fast. But there is another path. It is a path where leverage comes from depth, patience, and the quiet satisfaction of building the foundation that others stand on.

You don’t have to chase the spotlight to have a meaningful, high-impact career at a big company. Sometimes, the most ambitious thing you can do is stay put, dig in, and build something that lasts."

🎭 Oh dear, another Staff Engineer who just discovered the world isn't clamoring for their autograph. Apparently, Google engineers are now philosophers uncovering existential truths, yet the only spotlight they should be worrying about is the one over their desk that won't stop flickering. 🚀🔦

Five points that will put you in the doors of promotion:

1️⃣ You delivered your commitments

2️⃣ You worked outside of your team

3️⃣ You implemented solutions to problems impacting the Engineering organization

4️⃣ You proposed and led experiments and edge initiatives

5️⃣ You appeared and showed up in cross-Engineering meetings and discussions

And it’s not so much a component for early-career developers in some ladders.

If you're an IC looking to grow your career, I highly recommend reading both the book and the article to redefine how you view your contributions and influence.

What is your experience with "glue work"? Do you see it valued on your team?

New scale for how long intermittent problems have been popping up:

Level 1: Bryan is getting annoyed (pretty low bar)
Level 2: Bryan has created a meme.
Level 3: Bryan has several memes ready to go when it pops up again.
Level 4: Bryan has scripted the creation of resolution tickets when it crops up.

If you're a senior-level developer and wondering how to continue to rise the ranks without switching into management (a completely different skill set!), the terms to look for are "staff" and/or "principal" engineer.

I didn't know this until ~4 years ago, so maybe it's news to you, too!

I have a bunch of new followers who seem to be mostly in tech (hello!) so I should point out that I narrated an audiobook that may be of interest to some of you:

Staff Engineer: Leadership beyond the management track
by @lethain

If you are reaching the top of the tech ladder in a large organization but don't want to go into management (and who could blame you), this may be the book for you.

Audiobook cover for "Staff Engineer: Leadership beyond the management track" by Will Larson. It shows a greyscale illustration of an old-fashioned map. A tall ship at full sail travels eastward towards a small inlet. A dotted line representing its route goes from the open waters to the main landmass and then back out to sea. A yellow banner across the bottom right corner says: "now in audio".

I recently finished the audiobook version of Tanya Reilly's book, The Staff Engineer's Path. It put all the learning I had into a nice and concise format. I really like the structure of the book and practical insights into the staff engineer role. If you don't have the chance to work with good staff+ engineers in the past. This book is a good alternative to help you understand what good looks like!

I've seen many projects where surprisingly little data has been used to make architectural decisions, so this week I've decided to share a little bit about being a data-driven staff+ engineer and using metrics to drive architecture.

Senior #softwareengineer out there: how do you keep up on coding and other hands-on skills when your daily job is basically writing documents, attending meetings and “work through others”?
