Part 2/2 Dead Things
I thought there was a dead insect that was rotting as I sat down to sort and catalog my latest finds, but I couldn't find it despite sniffing around. When I went to open the window for some fresh air, an involuntary squueeee escaped me. My carrion flower is in bloom. That was what was stinking up the room😂

Some more very cool euphorbias, a field of stapelias, and a very common aloe that nonetheless looked wild and healthy
#Stapelia gigantea flower - it snapped off in the snow earlier today. It’s still above freezing, so the snow was really heavy and wet.

I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do when the Stapelia gigantea flowers. The flowers can reach a diameter of over 40cm (16 inch) when fully open.
Oh, and if it wasn't clear they smell like carrion. It's an evolutionary strategy to trick flies and beetles to pollinate it's flowers. Sadly for the pollinators they've been duped: No nectar nor rotting meat to eat on these plants!
Just a hungry fly on a stinky carrion flower.
