#Tamarisk

Around Lizard Point I saw my first naturalised Tamarisk trees in three locations: sheltering the youth hostel, a short distance to the W along the coast path (openstreetmap.org/way/81477139), and above a large patch of Blackthorn scrub closer to the village.

My expectations of this small tree are entirely coloured by one or more images from Ladybird Books I first read nearly 60 years ago. 1/2.

A branch of Tamarisk near the Youth Hostel at Lizard Point, Cornwall. Many of the trees were bare, but this one still held the scale-like.leaves closely oppressed to the twig. Red object bottom right is the camera strapThe last page spread from the Ladybird Book of Trees (published in the 1960s). Three trees are described on the left hand page and illustrated on the right hand one. A tall Maritime Pine stands above a shelving beach with a pink-flowered Tamarisk to the left and a silvery-leaved Sea Buckthorn to the right. Cones of the pine are displayed in the foreground.

Uzbekistan plants a #forest where a sea once lay news.mongabay.com/2024/05/uzbe

"The #Aral Sea, once the lifeblood of peoples in #Uzbekistan and #Kazakhstan, is parched, shrouded in a layer of toxic salt and dust... both countries are working with locals to plant a new forest of drought-resistant #plants (#saxaul, #saltwort, #ephedra, #tamarisk) in the dried-out lakebed... a single saxaul shrub that’s 7 to 10 years old can stop 2-4 metric tons of moving sand"

Photo of a dry flat landscape covered in sand and small shrubs. There are two people inspecting the plants.

Pea fields of the Imperial Valley, California. Tamarisk trees are commonly planted along the irrigation ditches for shade so necessary in this desert valley. Note water barrels

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177697

The image is a black and white photograph that captures the essence of agricultural life. Two tall, slender tamarisk trees stand prominently in the center, their dark silhouettes contrasting with the lighter background. These trees are commonly planted along irrigation ditches for shade in arid environments like the Imperial Valley of California.

The landscape is characterized by vast expanses of dirt fields, punctuated by sparse vegetation and a few scattered shrubs. A few water barrels can be seen near one of the tamarisk trees, hinting at the labor-intensive nature of farming in such an environment.

In the distance, you can discern the faint outlines of what appears to be farmland and possibly a building or structure, though it's far too distant to make out any specific details. The sky is clear and blue, suggesting a sunny day, which is ideal for agricultural activities.

The image has a vintage feel, possibly due to its black and white format, hinting that this photograph could be from the early 20th century when color photography was less common. The absence of modern infrastructure or vehicles in the photo further supports this timeframe estimation.

There are two orange and black butterflies sitting close together in a Tamarisk tree. They are sitting so that each has a wing pointed nearly touching and pointed up while the other wings form a ninety degree angle. The tree had slender pink flowers a few inches long. The tree is green and fills the background.
