Today I found bird nest fungus growing on a dead stalk of grass. The tops of the fungus have not yet opened. I brought the stalk inside to my macro focus rail to make some test images. Honestly, the images were not very interesting with the fungus caps not open. I returned the grass stalk to where I found it. I will wait for them to mature before photographing again.

A photo of the specimen mounting stage of my 3D printer converted to a focus stacking rail. 3D printed articulated arms ending with alligator clips hold a grass stalk in a fixed position. Other articulated arms hold tiny LED lights that precisely aim at the mushroom subject on the grass stalk. The end of the DSLR lens juts into the image from the lower left. The end of the lens is about 10cm away from the subject.

Two closeup focus stacked images of an African Daisy. Both used 20 individual images using the same Canon 70D and Canon EF-S 60mm Macro Lens. One image using the Magic Lantern software while the other was done using a focus rail. Both stacked images was done in Zerene Stacker in Linux
