> his.. belief in the Constitution as the protector of all Japanese subjects.. make it axiomatic that the welfare of citizens, no matter how obscure, must take precedence over the demands of.. industry, however ‘vital to the nation’. #Shozo was never antagonistic to industry or #modernization as such but his conviction that people came first was so deeply.. held that he never felt it necessary to discuss in a rational way the problems attendant on #RapidIndustrialization. #TanakaShozo #田中正造 #正造

> Like many of their #samurai forbears, whose attitudes in practice often belied the honoured status theoretically accorded to the farmer in #feudalSociety, they could not help regarding the peasantry as a remote, barely human species whose welfare certainly did not concern them. The instinctive assumption was, therefore, that any restriction of the mine’s activities in the interests of mere #peasants was unthinkable.

Night, a cold hard rain
Bull pulls a loaded cart
No wheel tracks remain

Struck hard by the rain
Bull pulls funeral wagon
Nothing left after

This might be the(a?) source for #KennethStrong's book title _Ox Against The Storm: A biography of Tanana Shozo - Japan's Conservationist Pioneer

But isn't an ox a neutered bull?
En Mexicano: ¿Si, buey?

Tanaka Shozo on Water has me thinking of LaoTzu's (LaoTse's LaoZi's) Chapter 8 and a book about pump storage dams and how they drive up the cost of electricity as they service nuclear reactors.

Shozo Tanaka's photo with his name is arranged with his quote about water. The quote appears two times once in two-lines and once in 5 lines. There are four English translations of the quote:
Water freely goes from high to low only
water is not conquered by legal excuses.

The logic of water freely flowing from high to low
is not long reversed by legal wrangling.

Water's principle to freely from high to low only go
water is undeterred under legal deformations.

Water freely from high to low goes
water under legal justifications is not overcome.

Why didn't I start reading Shozo Tanaka years ago? He's making me think of Wendell Berry looking to Nature as Measure, how people should look to forests, mountains as models...

The image, made with the racket-pict code found through the post's codeberg link, shows Shozo Tanaka's re-working of the ideographs (kanji characters) for Mountain and River. he added lines representing water flows through thicker line drawings of the characters. His 2Japanese sentences about the diagrams are next to the characters and their re-workings. The Japanese includes furigana for pronunciation . Robert Stolz's translation of the senteces (from the English: link in the post) is below the diagram and Japanese. QR-codes are included so that people can get to the source articles from a print-out.

> ... the condolence payment system was fraught with rumor-mongering, intimidation and outright fraud. Despite the 1897 order and the small sums paid out by Furukawa, the pollution problem continued, and a second Pollution Prevention Committee was created in 1902.

I'm reading of #TanakaShozo and seeing the same patterns seen in #Minamata and #Toroku.

> According to Yanakagaku thought, the Japanese state's construction of dams and sluices inhibits the natural [Nagare] flow of the river, thereby increasing Doku [Poison].
