I really enjoyed the tense, claustrophobic underwater thriller side of The Abyss — all the stuff about pressure, personalities clashing, and things slowly going wrong. I’ve never loved the last 20 minutes though. Once it fully leans into the alien side of things, I could have done without all of that.

Those paying attention will notice that I went to see this the same day as Wilt. Quite a contrast.

When I finished episode 2 of #TheWarBetweenTheLandAndTheSea I was thinking that this would be what #TheAbyss would be if it:

1. had to bore #DoctorWho fans to tears for most of the first episode having characters monologue explanations of what UNIT was;

1. had a small bit of gender politics, Twitter/TikTok propagandists, and Thames Water mixed in;

1. had mobile 'phones and Bluetooth and was in the 21st century; and

1. somehow had the U.K. being in charge of everything, totally ignoring China, U.S.A. exceptionalism, Canada and the rest of the Americas, India, and France.

I have just finished episode 3. I see that they thought of that last point. (-:

That’s fascinating. Disney+ version of The Abyss has the fluorocarbon breathing rat but is the theatrical version whereas ITVx is the cut version of the Special Edition (but has ads) with the rat off camera. The definition is definitely higher on ITVx as well, something going on there. Anyway I watched the Disney+ version and it was fine. In the UK we haven’t been able to watch it for ages due to the rat scene, but now we can, either with rat or without. But if you want the rat it costs you 20 minutes ;-)
