#ThreadPainting

The Su embroidery technique from China is usually done on translucent silk with thin (very, very thin!) silk threads and truly gorgeous thread paintings are made with this method, but there's also a double-sided variation. Often worked by two people, the needle is passed back and forth between the two with the work sitting upright on a frame between them. The two works that result are entirely different images.

#WIPWednesday the lighting is much better for pictures in my office than at home, so I wanted to make sure to grab a progress pic before the end of my short work week. Do I or don’t I want to add beads to the tufted chair? #embroidery #threadpainting

An embroidered picture on a base of cream and pink brocade of a red haired woman in a blue upholstered chair knitting a kitten out of grey yarn.

Fixed her wonky updo and added freckles and beauty marks! This still isn’t a self portrait, I almost always give my characters my neck mole. #embroidery #wip #threadpainting

Between the fact that my hair is a dark copper at the moment and that any face I draw without a model inevitably looks a lot like me, one of the ladies at work is convinced that this is a self-portrait. Oops. #embroidery #wip #threadpainting

Still working on her face, but it’s getting closer. I’m looking forward to adding freckles and moles. #embroidery #wip #threadpainting

If you’re wondering why there’s a rosier dot at the tip of her nose - I experimented a bit with putting blush in her cheeks before the base skin tone, and I love the subtle glow it gave me. Her nose is just waiting to be sewn.

Hands are shaded (although I may go back in on them later) and décolletage has its base color - I’m using thread direction and overlap to start to define structure before I add shade variations. #embroidery #threadpainting #wip

An outline of a woman knitting, stitched in golden brown thread on a cream brocade with pink roses and green leaves, with her hands and chest filled in a pale peachish tone.

A good planner would have decided to use this fabulous burnout velvet from my stash as a ground cover appliqué BEFORE embroidering all that flying hair that will now need to be redone, but good planning isn’t really my brand. #embroidery #wip #ThreadPainting #applique

Starting on trees - if you’ll zoom you’ll see that I also started to rough in cacti and then stopped because I decided I’ll do the trees fully, then lauer the other growth over them for more dimension - I may also stumpwork some of the cacti. #embroidery #ThreadPainting #wip
