What's blooming #today San Jose?!

I noticed that my Opuntia azurea (commonly known as Purple prickly pear) is in bloom! I haven't managed to catch this one in bloom before. Lots of cactus flowers only last a day so if you miss them you're out of luck for another year.

Opuntia azurea (commonly known as Purple prickly pear) is an attractive plant, with bluish, reddish or purplish-green stems (bright red-purple when young) bearing long red spines (usually just one per areole) along the rim and the upper part of each pad. The cactus flowers profusely in early summer, producing large, yellow-red blooms, followed by red/purple fruits. Mine is potted in a medium size terracotta pot. There are four spent flowers and one in full bloom. At the base of the plant is a Lego character from the second Lego Movie. Constructed from yellow, red and orange bricks, Queen Whateva I Wanna Be, has a small yellow flower on top of a very abstract form.
