(No organs, muscles, etc.) It's obvious that it doesn't "wear" its shell, like in Looney Tunes cartoons. Tortoises can't just "take off" their shells like a jacket or, pardon the pun, a turtleneck sweater. :)

Instead, they have thick vertical bone structures attached to the inner dome of the shell which supports and elevates the shell off the ground at two points near the "shoulders" & "hips". A bone and/or cartilage plate runs underneath the tortoise, also stretching between the "shoulder" & "hip" bones from the bottom,. The outer shell attached to the bottom of it. The legs have little elbows in the front and knobby knees in the back, and each are made up of three bones (similar to human arms and legs). This tortoise appears to have four toes on each foot.

The bones of the neck & head are also attached to the "shoulders" (but they're not cross-cut like the rest of the animal). It's looking off to the left but it's also keeping that one eye on you too, as if it were asking if you have any lettuce you'd like to share. I actually have a pet tortoise and I'm familiar with this look lol.

Boris, Daisy, and Pancake, our Russian tortoises. In the summer they live in an enclosure outside and in the winter they have houses indoors. They don't get as much press as the cats and dogs, but they're good animals. It's funny when I go out to see them and the come trundling over. #TortoisesOfMastodon
