Damon Hill (@HillF1):

We recently instigated a 20MPH speed limit in our village. Now we have steam engines taking advantage of our generosity! Really makes me SO CROSS!! 😤 I have steam coming out of my ears! #f1 #steam #tractors #tractionengines #steamengines #20MPH #speed #speedlimit t.co/CCOTU5VA8B

Today we went to the "Artisan Fair & Steam Event" #Papplewick #PumpingStation in #Ravenshead near #Nottingham (papplewickpumpingstation.org.u).
They were running the steam engine, there were 3 traction engines (various scales!), and you could have a tour round the brick-lined, vaulted-ceiling water storage structure, which sadly stopped being used in 1906 when a crack was found in one of the walls.

Working scale model of a traction engine.
The current owner bought it second-hand and spent a long time stripping it down, fixing it, and repainting it.
It looked amazing, but cost around £30,000!! Not sure if that is before or after the renovation."G Saint & Family Papplewick Notts" traction engine.
The engine is idling, with steam coming out of the chimney.
The engine itself is painted a dark red, with a black roof. The same engine, with a closeup of a copper kettle that has been plumbed into the engine to provide hot water.
The handle is still attached, but it pretty useless, as the kettle is unmovable! There is a little tap on the side at the bottom to access the hot water.A picture showing the underground water storage structure with amazing vaulted-ceilings, that was used from the 1880 until 1906, when a crack was found in one of the walls, although a reason was never recorded, could have been due to subsidence.
Apparently it holds about 1.5m gallons.

The acoustics were amazing!
Sometimes choirs go to perform down here.

We visited our friend @Indigoatcrafts this afternoon.

Lots of catching up, looking at her garden, moving some heavy stones for her, sitting outside a pub (soft drinks for me), and seeing steam traction engines.

We even came home with a gifted wall mounted garden hose reel.

Two Clayton And Shuttleworth Ltd. steam traction engines parked side by side outside an old stone built village pub (on the right). The sky is clear blue behind the still mostly bare tree tops.
The engine on the left is seen head on, the front of the boiler framed by the smaller front, and larger rear, wheels. The registration number CF3547 is displayed at the base of the tall funnel.
The engine on the right is seen slightly from a 3/4 view so the boiler cladding frame can be seen painted in a bright green, while the wheels are painted in a bright yellow. The same engines as in the previous image but seem from further back at a 3/4 front position. The Stone building behind can be seen in more detail, showing that it is a two storey building with upper floor sash windows glazed with eight small panes of glass per sash.

It can now be seen that the left side engine is painted in a darker green with deep burgundy wheels. A name place on the side of a wooden tool box says 'Nelson'.

Both engines, though well kept and cleaned do still look like they have done work, and are not just polished museum pieces.
They are both in steam and are gently idling having just been parked there.
Bridge over the Turkey Brook at Turkey Street, Enfield. Other lovely names in this area: Enfield Wash, Carterhatch, Ponders End and Freezywater.

Cast iron sign attached to the brick parapet wall of a bridge. In black raised lettering on a white background, it warns that the bridge "which is a county bridge" is insufficient to carry traction engines and heavily laden carriages.

This is a postcard I listed for sale yesterday, of the Burrell Traction Engine "Morning Star" owned by Jacob Studt's fairground business. The photo was taken by one Dick Strange, probably in the 1930s. Dick Strange was a well-known Punch & Judy man from Stroud in Gloucestershire. He was also the person who later gave Tony Hancock his infamous "cursed" puppet for use in the 1963 film The Punch & Judy Man.
