Provinces failing their their cities on #UrbanWater is something of pastime in #CanadianPolitics. Even so, #DougFord and his minions stand out in their reflexive distrust of expertise and utter lack of interest in actually governing for the public good. Mike Harris and his cronies were close, I suppose. These are simply not serious people. #UrbanWaterFutures #SwimDrinkFish #OurGreatLakes

Plan to pump untreated sewage into Lake Ontario's West Channel is anti-sport (CBC)On Wednesday, the Toronto Star reported that the Ontario provincial government, as part of its plan to lease Ontario Place's valuable real estate to a private spa operator, intends to empty sewer pipes into the West Channel, the same stretch of water that hosted the Pan Am Games triathlon, and which is still in use by rowers, open-water swimmers and other water sports enthusiasts.

Put another way, if the provincial government succeeds in dumping sewer water into the West Channel, you can add E.coli to the list of risks swimmers would face in a triathlon there. Except calling it a risk understates the odds. It's more of a certainty.Doug Ford governmentโ€™s plan to move Ontario Place sewer away from megaspaโ€™s planned beach โ€” and into rowing and swimming area โ€” has locals fuming. (Toronto Star, 10 October 2024)The province is looking at diverting a wastewater pipe that empties beyond the breakwall at Ontario Placeโ€™s West Island into the West Channel that rowers and swimmers use.

Richard Lautens, Toronto Star @ By David Rider Senior Politics Reporter

The Ford government wants sewer pipes that send raw waste into Lake Ontario to be directed into a channel used by swimmers and rowers, the Star has learned. The reason? To prevent pollution of a beach Therme is building at a redeveloped Ontario Place. The unpublicized stopgap plan is taking flak from users of the West Channel, including a leader of a lake swimmersโ€™ group, the CNE and the local councillor, who wants wider public consultations on the plan.

A presentation on #UrbanWater and #MarathonSwimming that some very patient urbanists and philosophers endured on Friday, at a wonderful 10th anniversary meeting of the Philosophy of the City Research Group at Brooklyn College. This might be the weirdest take on a classic marathon swim: urban swimming as flรขneury!

We can fight all of the familiar battles, against pollution and shortsighted planning, indifference to profound injustices, but we also need to imagine our urban waters as a vital part of our lives, together.

I am thrilled and honoured to announce that I have been appointed as the next Director of the Water: Effective Technologies and Tools (WETT) Research Centre at #RMITUniversity (starting from the end of January, 2023).

I look forward to building on the excellent prior leadership of Prof. Jega Jegatheesan and previously, Prof. Felicity Roddick and to working with current and future members of the #WETTResearchCentre to expand and further strengthen our research, innovation and translation in water science, engineering and technologies at #RMIT.

I look forward also to working collaboratively with water industry partners and stakeholders (including Aboriginal Traditional Owners) to provide sustainable solutions for water management and usage and to protect our natural waterways, bays and seas.

#Water is a basic nutrient essential for survival, but also a source of recreation and myths. Tomorrow, the conference #UrbanWaterII will start at the #KielerKunsthalle, dealing with the question of how urban actors in the #premodern era perceived their environment in connection with water and interacted with it: cluster-roots.uni-kiel.de/en/c

By 2050 projections have 80% of the roughly 10 billion people on earth living in urban regions. Global average temperatures are likely to be 2-3 degrees C above pre-industrial levels and extreme conditions may render swathes of the planet effectively uninhabitable. scarcity will be rampant.
