Lavinia Villanelle

She just regained her words, and yet her
father ran her through and said
"When I next meet you you'll be better"

Fixed, not victim to who spread her
til she begged they leave her dead
and hidden from both man and heaven.

Arriving from where they had led her
brutalized, her family's dread
all echoed, "hanging would be better

than to be like this" (however,
that they'd prefer to grieve instead
of live with this: she, spared from heaven,

hurt, used for another's pleasure,
but still safe within her bed
astounded); they believed it better

and that the kill was mercy—said her
father to her lifeless head
"When I next meet you you'll be better"
(as if he'd be reaching Heaven).

Lavinia Modified Villanelle

As if to tie their child's shoes—
with equal tenderness and care
—they'll smile as they tie your noose

and call it love; so don't assume
that you, now broken, will be spared
if you insist you still have use

there's nothing left that you can prove
(at least, no trades they'd figure fair)
They've gotten what they want from you

and now that worth you had is ruined,
damaged beyond all repair
(Though you and I both know the truth

that you became expendable as soon
as you were changed but dared
to still exist with no excuse)

and so to graciously reduce
the pain of you still being there
they'll smile as they tie your noose
(and wait for you to thank them, too).

A dog you couldn't fix so you put down
A choice you made with love—or you believed
You'd save me from the things I'd been around
And resurrect the child that you grieved

When you sent me to heaven did you guess
You'd see me clothed in feathers, crowned in light
the 'right' version, without what gave you stress
the me that hadn't changed, the one you liked?

How did it feel to peer beyond the gate
And see me laughing on the other side
Retaining all the traits you'd come to hate
Still broken, still an angel glorified?

When you were turned away were you surprised?
(Remind me: which of us was first denied?)
