Remembering the women who served in the WAAF in WW2.
Lily Thorpe was born in 1901.
Lily joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), Rank Colonel, Service No. 523518, Military Base: Sutton Coldfield, Warwicks Unit: 215 Maintenance Unit Command.
On the 8th August 1943 Corporal Lily Thorpe died aged 42 while in service for her country. Her remains are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery. Also, Private Walter Holbrey is buried in the same grave. #WW2 #WAAF

Marjorie Sylvia Titley daughter of John Titly and Annie Vallance, she was born in 1925, Rotherham, Yorkshire.
She joined the WAAF, Rank: Leading Aircraftwoman, Service No. 2136002, Unit: 958 Balloon Squadron, Military Base Swansea, Glamorganshire. She died on 12th December 1943 aged 18 while on active service. She was buried at Bramley Burial Ground. #WW2 #yorkshire #WAAF

Mary Brown Wyness was born in 1912, Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of Robert Harry and Annie Merchant Wyness
Mary joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). Rank Aircraftwoman 2nd Class. Service No. 2046417. Military Unit: RAF and Dominion Air Force. She was killed in an accident the day after she returned to her unit on 4th July 1942 aged 30. #WW2 #WAAF

2. Crashed Attempting to Land At Rennes in Bad Visibility At Night and Short of Fuel During A Transit Flight to the United Kingdom. Both were was aged 30.
The remains of Hilda and her husband were recovered and buried at Rennes Eastern Cemetery. #WW2 #WAAF

Hilda Victoria Timms (nee Johnson) was born in 1914, Ilford, Essex. She was the daughter of Arthur Edgar Johnson and Gertrude Margaret Hayward.

Hilda joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). Rank Sergeant. Service No. 834422. Military Base, Heliopolis, Egypt Command North Africa. On 7th October 1945 she and her husband Sergeant John Edward Timms were killed whilst flying. #WW2 #WAAF

Irene Comley was born in 1920, Pontypridd, Wales. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Rank Leading Aircraftwoman. Squadron No. 421574. HQ Unit No.6 Group. Military Base Abingdon, Berkshire. Bomber Command.
Irene died on 23rd March 1942 while on active service, Hendon, London aged 22. Her remains are buried at Pant Cemetery Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. #WW2 #WAAF

Dora joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). Service No. 2037954. Rank: Aircraftwoman 2nd Class (A.C.W). Military base: Pocklington, Yorkshire. Bomber Command.
Dora died on 29th February 1944 aged 21. #WW2 #WAAF

Ida Roydhouse was born in 1925, Driffield, Yorkshire.
She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Service No. 2137585. Rank: Aircraftwoman 2nd Class. Military Base, Lindholme. Command: Bomber Command.
She died on 2nd January 1945 in Beverley Base hospital of acute Nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) aged 19. She in buried Sunk Island Holy Trinity Churchyard, East Yorkshire. #WAAF #WW2

In 1933 she married Hector R P Griffiths at Nantwich, Cheshire. In 1939 Nellie’s occupation was a Steam Presser Clothing Ironer and she was living with her parents in Nantwich, Cheshire.

Aircraftwoman 1st Class Carrie Bridges.
Carrie Bridges was born in 1921, Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire. She was the daughter of William Bridges and Jane Roberts.
She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Service No. 472382. Rank ACW1. Military base, RAF Marston Moor, Yorkshire. She was killed on 12th August 1944; she died of serious injuries she sustained in a vehicle accident aged 22. #WW2 #WAAF #yorkshire

3. The trainee bomber pilot misjudged the landing at Marston Moor, instead of flying an overshoot and trying another approach to land he landed. The aircraft landed to fast and overshot at 16.08hrs, it struck an M.T vehicle parked on a dispersal pan. Sadly the driver (Jean Scargill) sustained serious head injuries and died. #WAAF #WW2

2. She was working as a driver and was killed when her truck was hit by a Halifax bomber at Marston Moor, on 8th July 1943 age 20. She is buried at St. Cuthbert Churchyard, Cleveland, Yorkshire.
Halifax BB308 at Marston Moor airfield. During the afternoon of 8th July 1943 this 1652 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft was being flown on a training flight. #WW2 #WAAF

Jean Cowie born in 1923, Guisborough, Yorkshire. She was the daughter of Alexander Cowie and Mabel Gwendolyn Keen.

3. The daughter of Claude Hudson, 882414 Aircraftwoman 2nd Class Marguerite Hester Hudson died, age 19 in the raid on RAF Driffield, Yorkshire. She was buried at Sheffield (Wisewood) cemetery. The Royal Air Force declared her to be the first W.A.A.F. to die on active service. #WWII #history #WAAF #yorkshirewomen
