Heute vor 67 Jahren: Am 12. Oktober 1957 sammelte sich ein 9000m³ großer radioaktiver See um den #Kernreaktor #Windscale wo es zwei Tage zuvor zu einem schweren Brand kam. Die Bevölkerung wurde erst jetzt gewarnt, Millionen Liter kontaminierte Milch heimlich ins Meer entsorgt.
Heute vor 67 Jahren: Am 11. Oktober 1957 wurde das Feuer im #Kernreaktor von #Windscale nach riskanten Löschversuchen unter Kontrolle gebracht. Bereits am 10. Oktober war der Brand ausgebrochen und hatte radioaktive Stoffe freigesetzt. Die Öffentlichkeit wurde nicht informiert.
Heute vor 67 Jahren: Am 10. Oktober 1957 kam es im britischen #Kernkraftwerk #Windscale, infolge einer Verkettung von Ereignissen ab dem 8. Oktober, zu einem schweren Reaktorbrand, der Radioaktivität freisetzte. Rund 240 Menschen starben später an den Folgen von #Lungenkrebs.
Heute vor 67 Jahren: Am 9. Oktober 1957 kam es zu einem drastischen Temperaturanstieg im #Kernreaktor #Windscale (heute #Sellafield) Pile 1, der am Vortag eingeleitet wurde. Fehlende Temperaturmessstellen und unzureichende Überwachung führten zu kritischen Werten über 400 °C.
Heute vor 67 Jahren: Am 8. Oktober 1957 wurde der #Kerneaktor Pile 1 in #Windscale (heute #Sellafield) trotz fehlender Messstellen weiter aufgeheizt was zwei Tage später unbemerkt in einen Brand mündete und zum schlimmsten #Nuklearunfall (INES 5) in #Großbritannien führte.
This was the #Chalkriver accident . It preceded the better known accidents at #windscale - later renamed #sellafield - in #england by some years.

Those promoting Nuclear as Clean, Reliable, & Economic want us to forget the #Windscale reactor fire back in 1957 is still being decommissioned.
Just managing, guarding, monitoring, maintaining derelict Nuclear sites costs billions each year. There is a daily consumer tax on energy users to pay the estimated £260 billion cost of decommissioning for the next 100 years.
