Almost 02:30 here in #Edmonton and guess what?
#AirQuality is #SuperGreen!!!1!
#Ventilate asap! 🌬️
You have to watch out though, as the value it shows may not be that of your own neighbourhood. According to Air Visual Edmonton's air isn't great but is somewhere in the 50s range.
Click on Edmonton and scroll down to the map. Click on the map and zoom in for the rather nastier granular detail. 😢
My area is closer to 180-200 today.
Special #AirQuality statement from #EnvironmentCanada just issued: #wildfire #smoke warning in effect for #Edmonton and area until Friday evening.
We are also once again at #TenPlus on the #AHQI scale of 1-10. 🙄
Ooof. Not entirely sure where this is coming from but amid the cooling rain tonight has somehow arrived rather terrible #AirQuality.
😬😢
Maps seem to show this scattered somewhat randomly through the city plus of course higher levels heading westward towards #YellowheadCounty.
#MaskUp, folks!
*choke* *cough* *gasp*
WTF is going on? It's waaaay too late for the neighbour's laundry scent to be suffocating me.
*checks #AirQuality for city*
Ah, I see. It's just all gone to crap tonight. 🙄😡
Crappy #AirQuality at the moment folks. Seems to be citywide: I don't know the source.
Hopefully it won't last long. 😬
Updated smoke forecast for Alberta & adjacent areas, from Environment Canada:
https://weather.gc.ca/firework/firework_anim_e.html?type=em&utc=12®ion=prairies
Good news: They predict clear air in Edmonton for most of the day Friday (tomorrow), as strong winds from the northwest put us right in the gap between smoke from the northern fires and the mountain fires.
Bad news: They seem to be predicting a massive increase in fire activity in the Rockies / Kootenays on Saturday. Probably because of all those strong, swirling winds.
QUICK #EDMONTON, while the #AirQuality is far from perfect it is the BEST it has been in days and (nearing 01:00 MT) appears still to be improving!!!
Even better, the air is COOL!
Vent and cool while you can, folks! 🙂
Alas, I didn't have the opportunity to say that last bit though, because as I noted, the nitwit was bravely doing a drive-by, barely-intelligble as it was. 🙄
Probably best I didn't add to his distractions in the smoke-laden air.
😂😂😂
2/2
Two pieces of good news for today:
The Environment Canada smoke forecast says Edmonton might get a good gap of clear air for a few hours around noon. 🤞 #YEGaq #YEGwx
My mum and I will be installing my new air conditioner, so I can have cool air without smoke tomorrow night. 🙏
PS: "I don't know how hot it got" because my old bimetal furnace thermostat maxes out at 30°C. Which it is still reading, but it's definitely cooler now than it was yesterday evening.
Amazed to learn today via CBC News that @CityofEdmonton has an air hazard protocol AND it includes making #N95 masks freely available at city facilities!
Excellent to see. Please keep it up. ❤️
(PS: And consider continuing to use that N95 even when the air LOOKS clean, because #CovidIsNotOver!)
4:40am, awake, need to refill my water mug, might as well check the AQ see if its safe to let that cool morning air inside.
Darnit.
Enjoy your clear air, Entwhistle.

Heads up, Edmonton!
Environment Canada is predicting that heavy smoke will reach us about noon Friday. And before then, possible patchy smoke will pass over us tonight.
With new lightning-started fires the past 2 days in hot & dry forests both north & west of us, it's likely that next week will be very smokey indeed. Whether it will be smokey enough to cut the heat wave short remains to be seen.
Bad news for those of us relying on fresh early morning air to stay cool!
Edmonton: If you have to be outside this afternoon, note that there's an air quality warning for smog pollutants, which may not show up on your particulate-based air quality apps. (PM2.5 is still in the moderate range)
I've been sincerely and deeply grateful that the past few weeks have been completely unlike the May 5, 2023-to-October(?) conditions of last year, including generally good air quality.
It's been a wonderful, gentle spring and summer.
But now, full-on anxiety is back in force for the foreseeable future. 😢
(At least #solstice is past so our nights stretch slightly longer every passing day!)
Just after I post about fire risk increasing in northern Alberta & the NWT, I go to rest a bit in the other room, that has the window open, & notice a distinct smell of smoke. 😣
It looks like the worst of the smoke is going to pass north & east of Edmonton over the next few days (see forecast), but those forecasts are notoriously unreliable so I guess I'm back to checking AQ any time I go out or open a window.
Bad air just when it gets hot out. Great.
Edmonton smoke update: Uggggghhhhh.
(Chart from the Alberta Capital Airshed live map, which has rather annoying UI but there is good data if you click around.)
The weather forecast is still saying rain tonight or tomorrow, so that's something. Not as good news as rain in the places that are currently burning, but at least I might be able to skip masking up to go out & water the garden.
