In 1961, the Vostok 1 launch made Yuri Gagarin the first human to fly in Earth orbit. 20 years later in 1981, after several launch scrubs, #NASA launched STS-1 Columbia, the first orbital test flight of the Space Shuttle system, with astronaut test pilots John Young (of Apollo 16 Moon landing fame) and Bob Crippen. I am pretty sure we just drove by a light up bike crowd celebrating #YurisNight on the I-90 trail just east of the José Rizal bridge. Tempted to go walk up and find out and say hi but also very tired from pottery.

I almost missed that today is #YurisNight! It's hard to understate how amazing it is that humanity has had a constant presence in space for so long and I certainly can't imagine what it must have been like on that night in 1961.

Sólo diré al respecto que respeto muchísimo el coraje del tipo, ya que la cápsula Vostok 3KA era bastante primitiva y peligrosa. Y extiendo mi apreciación a quienes siguieron los pasos de Gagarin: Titov, Nikoláyev, Popóvich, Bykovski y, última pero no menor, Tereshkova.
