Gave up on trying to backport my compiler to K&R C syntax for bootstrapping to #cpm with BDS C on #fz80... SDCC has too many codegen bugs in its #z80 backend, so working on bootstrapping with cross-compiling itself to z80 #assembly. I got the z80 backend plumbed in successfully this morning 🎉 Hoping that debugging and fixing issues with my own code might go faster than digging around blindly in SDCC! 🤞

ZX Spectrum я впервые увидел, ещё будучи школьником в гостях у одноклассника, и сразу решил, что совершенно точно хочу себе такой же компьютер. К сожалению, семья у нас была не из богатых, потому воплотить мечту в реальность я смог только в старших классах. Впрочем, приобрести готовый компьютер всё равно возможности не было, пришлось собирать «Спекки» из купленных на радиорынке запчастей при помощи старшего приятеля, имевшего навыки радиомонтажа. Увы, спаяли мы его плохо: комп перезагружался всякий раз, когда на кухне включался бабушкин холодильник, да и вместо монитора мне выделили старый чёрно-белый телевизор, категорически запретив распаивать разъём RGB на единственном в доме цветном «Рубине». В общем, вдоволь наиграться на «Синклере» у меня не получилось, потому сейчас, уже в зрелом возрасте, я купил незаконченный проект на базе современного ZX Evolution и решил довести его до ума. As the proud owner of one of @tomjennings awesome #fz80 boxes, I'm reviving my #retrocomputing interest after a 30 year break🤓 In the process of porting my simple libc (to underpin my C compiler in progress), I'm wrapping up BDOS calls to simulate the dozen unix syscalls it uses. It's difficult! Maybe my lack of #bdos, #z80 , #cpm? Any advice on whether to plough on, or if I'm approaching it all wrong? Also do folks typically cross compile or have a C toolchain on device?

#electronics nerds: totally hypothetically of course, if I wanted to repurpose this piezo speaker into, oh I don't know... a ludicrous idea for a crude sound card where a data bus is connected to a series of resistors converting 8bit inputs into specific frequencies so that the #Z80 that I haven't even started to build yet can play proper notes 😅... how exactly would I go about 'holding' a note?

The caller has to copy the data into the correct stack location. The challenge is that the caller is not in the function's stack frame, so it's need to calculate where data must go as an offset from the current SP. And that offset will depend on how many parameters are still to be pushed on the stack.
The code here isn't actually very complex, but it's a mind freak.
Here's the function dispatch which generates IL for the copies. V is the callees variable.

@mattgodbolt `XOR EAX, EAX` is the descendant of `XRA A` on the #Intel8080 (aka `XOR A` on the #Z80). On those machines saving a single byte vs the two bytes of `MOV A, 0` *really* mattered, both in terms of not wasting any of your precious few kilobytes of memory but also avoiding the time taken for an extra fetch from memory. You could tell an experienced machine coder by whether they used this optimisation, which is now over 50 years old!
