"#Kochi’s cuisine is celebrated for its mix of influences, but few dishes illustrate this better than the humble #appam. Most #Keralites think of appam as something firmly rooted in local tradition. Yet, as #food #researcher Dr Tanya Abraham points out, its earliest form may have travelled here with the #Jewish community that once lived in Kochi. Their dish, known as #Oppo, is believed to have gradually evolved into what we know as appam today.

This thought took shape during a conversation on Kochi’s flavours at #ManoramaHortus in #SubhashPark. The discussion turned quickly from general food memories to the city’s long history of absorbing #culinary ideas. Dr Tanya noted that Kochi’s taste traditions grew from what travellers and settlers brought in over centuries."

Huge thanks to @chloeneast and @keds_economist for spearheading the #APPAM Women in Economics community. I thought the networking meetup was terrific, and the future of women economists in public policy is bright.

(I feel like I should post about my work more)

Presented some “what happened during the COVID years” work today at #APPAM The study looked at literacy growth for kids in Save the Children’s rural literacy programming from fall 2019 through spring 2021. It was a fun project because the Save the Children team are fantastic and curious and motivated. Also fun because their participants made upward progress—far better than what we’ve seen elsewhere during that timeframe.

Recent work highlight: Linking #landlords to uncover #ownership obscurity. Using #property records and corporation records in Boston, I show how to use text linking methods to uncover obscurity caused by both messy data and intentional ownership obscurity - when landlords use multiple LLCs - and show how this uncovers new scales of consolidation and responsibility for #evictions and property conditions.

Preprint coming soon!

I'm sorry to be missing #APPAM2022 #2022APPAM. It is my first and favorite conference because it (and #JPAM) are distinctive places that feature high-quality social-science research that can also center public-policy relevance as a motivation—without apology.

I hope #APPAM and #JPAM join Mastodon soon (and maybe run an instance?).
