Register for our Architecture Project Talk about Bert by Precht

Precht's tree-trunk-shaped modular house Bert is the focus of Dezeen's next Architecture Project Talk, presented in partnership with the Forest Stewardship Council. Register now to watch the webinar at 1:00pm London time on Tuesday 2 December.

During the webinar architect Chris Precht, who founded Austria-based practice Precht with his wife Fei Precht, will present his modular house, four of which have recently been completed at the Steirereck restaurant in Vienna.

The online talk is the second of a series of two Dezeen is hosting in partnership with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), where architects speak about their projects built using FSC-certified wood. The webinars will count towards continuing professional development (CPD) points for UK architects.

Precht developed Bert in collaboration with Austrian tiny home startup BaumBau, with the intention of creating a building with a minimal footprint. Dezeen revealed early renders in 2019, showing a tree-like cylindrical structure with wooden shingles and large circular windows.

Chris Precht will give the talk

The first iterations of Bert were recently built on the grounds of Steirereck, a restaurant in Vienna that has been named as one of the world's best. There, the structures will be used as accommodation for both restaurant staff and guests.

The buildings sit on circular bases, with tube-shaped modular cells containing kitchens, living space, bedrooms and bathrooms that can be stacked over and around it like the limbs of a tree branching out from the trunk.

Bert's constituent parts are cut from bent cross-laminated timber using a CNC machine and are prefabricated in a factory before being delivered to the site. The buildings are clad in wooden shingles that will weather and change colour over time.

During the talk, Precht will discuss playfulness in architecture and how this attitude can be retained when building at scale, as well as the practical challenges of building a modular cylindrical structure using prefabricated wooden elements.

Architecture Project Talk: Bert will take place at 1:00pm London time on Thursday 2 December 2021.

Register for our Architecture Project Talk about Senate House by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios

The University of Bristol's Senate House building by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios is the focus of Dezeen's next Architecture Project Talk, presented in partnership with the Forest Stewardship Council. Register to watch the webinar at 11:00am London time on Wednesday 3 November.

Architects from London architecture practice Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios will present the Senate House refurbishment they completed earlier this year, turning the 1960s administration building into a vibrant student hub.

The online talk is one of two Dezeen is hosting in partnership with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), in which architects will speak about key projects built using FSC-certified wood. The webinars will count towards continuing professional development (CPD) points for UK architects.

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios' refurbishment modernised the look of the building, improved its exterior, and made it more sustainable with low-energy heating and lighting.

The architects prominently use timber slats inside the building

The project makes prominent use of timber slats throughout the interior, including in a double-height extension that houses a new atrium.

The renovated building now includes co-working spaces, a food court, a student union-run bar and student information services.

There is also a multi-faith prayer room, a "Global Lounge" that functions as a hub for international students, a collaborative space for postgraduate research students and an extended student union "Living Room" that incorporates the university's first sensory room, providing a calm space for people with autism or sensory processing disorder to relax.

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios consulted directly with Bristol University students to create a vision for the project that would feel student-owned and improve mental wellbeing.

The building includes many kinds of study and social spaces

The practice was recently awarded the Building Design Award for Refurbishment Architect of the Year for its work on Senate House.

"Senate House shows the potential for transformational change, as a refurbished and extended building, but most importantly for its users," said Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios associate Nick Hodges.

Architecture Project Talk: Senate House will take place at 11:00am London time on Wednesday, 3 November 2021.

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios completed a refurbishment of the University of Bristol's Senate House building earlier this year. The building acts as a hub for students, offering both social spaces and support services, and prominently makes use of timber slats throughout its interior.

Project architects Rose Hart and Nick Hodges will discuss the design and delivery process, the use of wood throughout the project, and how the studio approached designing a contemporary mixed-use education space.

Bert is a modular treehouse by Austrian studio Precht

1:00pm London time on Tuesday 2 December 2021

Austrian architecture studio Precht recently completed Bert, a modular treehouse shaped like a tree trunk with large round windows.

Chris Precht, who runs the practice alongside his partner Fei Tang Precht, will deliver a lecture on how a modular structure with a cylindrical form can be built from wood, and how the project's form subverts the self-seriousness of the architectural profession by drawing on characters from the animated film Minions.
