Enveloping lounge chairs and lightweight office chairs from Arper feature on Dezeen Showroom

Italian brand Arper has presented a selection of contemporary lounge chairs for the home and office on Dezeen Showroom, including a semi-spherical bowl chair and minimalist armchairs designed for the circular economy.

Launched earlier this year, Barcelona design studio Altherr Désile Park created Arper's first solid wood lounge chair called Kata, which is informed by artisanal woven straw chairs.

The chair adopts circular economic principles in that the production, distribution and various components of the chair are designed to minimise environmental impact and increase the product's lifespan.

The Kata chair is sustainably designed with a FSC-certified wood frame and upholstery made from post-consumer plastic waste

Oak and black locust FSC-certified wood is used for the frame, which is topped with a water-based varnish.

The frame is upholstered in a 3D-knitted cover that forms both the seat and backrest in a unified piece. The knitted cover is made from polyester that has been sourced from post-consumer plastic waste – the equivalent of one kilogram of PET bottles – which is then recycled and woven into yarn.

At the end of its lifespan, the chair can be entirely disassembled and recycled.

Each component of the Mixu chair can be easily disassembled, repaired or replaced

Similarly, Arper's Mixu chair, designed by global architecture firm Gensler, also takes a sustainable approach and was created to "offer interior designers a degree of authorship and a sense of the human touch."

Made from FSC-certified wood and post-industrial recycled plastic, the chair is composed of three elements – a seat, backrest and base – which are held together without the use of glue or staples to ensure it can be easily dismantled, recycled or responsibly disposed of. This also makes it easy to replace various parts.

The commitment to sustainable principles is further demonstrated through the product's distribution, in which the chair is shipped in its disassembled state to reduce its volume and carbon footprint.

The Kinesit Met office chair is lightweight and minimal and features adjustable lumbar support

Design studio Lievore Altherr Molina has given the Kinesit Met office chair a contemporary update with a host of new textures and materials.

The lightweight office chair, which was originally launched in 2014, is now available in a refreshed palette of warm, cool and neutral tones that can be mixed and matched, with different colours used for the seat and backrest.

With a minimal and elegant silhouette, the chair is suited for home offices or comfortable work environments. It features adjustable lumbar support concealed within the thin backrest's frame and comes in a low or medium-back option.

The Aston seating range is distinguished by its deep profile and plush upholstered cushions

French designer Jean-Marie Massaud has evolved his Aston seating range to include new club chair models. Originally designed in 2006, the updated variations retain the same shape as their predecessor but offer a more relaxed feel and are tailored towards lounge settings instead of boardrooms.

The Aston Club features a deep inclined seat with ample space and a wraparound headrest designed to enclose its sitter in comfort and enhance privacy. It is also available with an optional footrest.

The Aston Club Low Back also provides generous comfort but takes a more compact form and has no headrest. Both chairs are available with four-star bases that can be finished in painted aluminium, no-VOC paint or polished.

Like Arper's other products, the chair's internal frame is composed of post-industrial recycled waste and can be easily disassembled and recycled.

Arper has released Bardi's Bowl Chair in two Rubelli fabrics that resemble Bo Bardi's work

Originally designed in 1951, Arper has reissued Bardi's Bowl Chair – created by modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi – as a nod to her recent Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in memoriam.

The brand collaborated with Venetian textile company Rubelli to create a limited and numbered edition of 500 pieces, releasing the chair in two Rubelli fabrics that resemble Bo Bardi's work.

The Lollipop fabric echoes typical 1950s prints featuring geometric patterns of red and mustard yellow brushstrokes, while the Eureka fabric has a similar colour palette but features a woven textured design.

Established in 1989, Arper is a family-run company that produces chairs, tables and furnishings

Arper is an Italian family-run company founded by Luigi Feltrin and his sons Claudio and Mauro in 1989.

The company produces furniture intended for communities, work and the home. Its products range from chairs, stools, sofas and benches to tables, accessories and acoustic panels.

The brand regularly collaborates with renowned architects and designers to create its products, as well as materials and finishing companies such as Kvadrat and Camira.

Aston Club seating by Jean-Marie Massaud for Arper

Dezeen Showroom: French designer Jean-Marie Massaud has expanded on his Aston chair design for Arper, with new club chair variations designed to enclose the sitter in luxurious comfort.

The Aston Club chair and Aston Club Low Back chair are based on the shape of the 2006 original but with features more suited to the lounge than the boardroom.

The Aston Club chair offers luxurious comfort with the serenity of a wraparound headrest

Described by Arper as offering "a timeless form designed for superlative comfort", the Aston Club chair has a deep inclined seat and a wraparound headrest to offer privacy and respite from the world, along with an optional footrest.

The newest variation, the Aston Club Low Back, offers a similar feeling of generous comfort but in a more minimal form.

The Aston Club Low Back combines comfort with a more minimal form

With no headrest, the Aston Club Low Back works well on its own or grouped in multiples for both conversation or relaxation.

Both Aston Club chairs come in a wide range of upholstery options, with four-star bases in either polished or painted aluminium, finished in no-VOC paint.

Their internal parts are made from post-industrial recycled plastic, and the chairs are made with no glue to allow for easy disassembly and recycling or upcycling.

Bardi's Bowl Chair by Lina Bo Bardi for Arper

Dezeen Showroom: Arper has collaborated with the Venetian textile company Rubelli to create a limited-edition version of Bardi's Bowl Chair by modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi.

Designed in honour of Bo Bardi's recent Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in memoriam, awarded during the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, the new version of Bardi's Bowl Chair is made in a numbered edition of 500.

Bardi's Bowl Chair is available in two Rubelli textile options, with Lollipop having a 50s-style print

The iconic chair comes upholstered in a choice of two colourful Rubelli fabrics – Lollipop and Eureka – chosen because of their similarity to Bo Bardi's work.

Recalling 1950s prints, Lollipop has a geometric pattern conjured in loose brushstrokes of red and mustard yellow, while Eureka features similar colours woven into a textured fabric.

The Eureka textile is woven from a multicoloured mix of threads

Both are paired with cushions upholstered in orange Rubelli fabrics – Lollipop with with Ralph and Eureka with Nap.

Bo Bardi designed the semi-spherical chair in 1951 and in 2012 Aper started manufacturing it, balancing the original design with contemporary advances in technique and production.

Arper to showcase new and classic chairs at Salone del Mobile

Dezeen promotion: Italian furniture brand Arper is exhibiting a curated selection of its chairs and sofas at this year's Salone del Mobile, including its production of Lina Bo Bardi's Bowl Chair.

Arper's new ranges launching at the Supersalone, which is taking place from 5-10 September, will include Kata, Kinesit Met, Mixu, Adell and Aston Club.

Bo Bardi's Bowl Chair will be shown in a special exhibition. The photo is by Ruy Teixeira

The brand's iconic product collections on show will be Catifa 46, Catifa 53, Cila, Saya, Leaf and Steeve.

This selection, which will also be on display at Arper's showroom on Via Pantano 30, has been made to align with an overarching theme called Re(new) Together.

The Kata chair is another new range on show

"(Re)new Together aims to stimulate a reflection on relationships in all shapes and forms," said the brand. "Relationships between objects, people and the environment that surrounds us and beckons our attention."

The new Kata range comprises solid wood lounge chairs designed for Arper by Barcelona design studio Altherr Désile Park, which also designed the shell-like Adell chair with Lievore.

Adell's seat is made from 80 per cent recycled polypropylene while Kata's is crafted from a tailor-made 3D knit textile made from recycled polyester and converted into lightweight and durable fibres.

Jean Marie Massaud designed the Aston Club lounge chair, which is composed of an adjustable backrest and four-legged base in shiny or painted aluminium.

"Each component of the Aston Club lounge chair can be disassembled and reupholstered as needed to ensure the longevity of the piece and reduce its environmental impact," explained the brand.

Adell chairs feature a shell-like seat

The Mixu collection includes chairs and stools designed with US architecture studio Gensler. Designers can customise the chair by mixing and matching materials and colours.

The Kinesit Met is an evolution of the Kinesit office chair design by Lievore Altherr Molina in 2014, which is now available in a new colour palette.

According to Arper, these newest products have been chosen as they demonstrate the brand's commitment to material recycling and reuse.

Meanwhile, Arper's classic products Catifa 53, Catifa 46, Cila, Saya, Leaf and Steeve are designed for flexibility and are intended to portray the brand's effort to create furniture that can be adapted to "ever-changing requirements".

Also on show is Steeve – a modular sofa system designed by Jean-Marie Massaud in 2015 for use in both home and work environments.

Cila is one of the classic furniture ranges on display

The Catifa 53 chair, which was also made for residential and commercial spaces, features a curved seat and slender clean-cut profile. It is designed by studio Lievore Altherr Molina, which also created Catifa 46 – the "little sister of Catifa 53" that has the same profile but is smaller in size.

Lievore Altherr Molina also designed Cila, a collection of chairs with curved polypropylene shells. Also on display is Saya – a wooden chair that boasts a graphic quality.

The final classic range on show is Leaf, which comprises stackable chairs made from painted steel with a sledge-like base alongside matching minimalist tables.

As part of Arper's presence throughout the Supersalone edition of Salone del Mobile, the brand will also pay homage to Bo Bardi in a special exhibition located in a pop-up space adjacent to its current showroom.

This exhibition, named Lina Bo Bardi In Full Color, will focus on Bardi's Bowl Chair that she designed in 1951 and feature models upholstered in Rubelli fabrics, launched in 2021.

Arper's exhibition spaces at Salone del Mobile have been developed with the artistic direction of Jeannette Altherr and are styled by Leandro Favaloro.

The Mixu collection was designed with Gensler

Arper will host a series of events at its showroom through the festival, including a panel discussion with Altherr, Massaud and Daniel Stromborg and a cocktail party.

The brand's showcase will be located in pavilion 4, hall D02. To find out more visit the Arper website.

Mixu chair by Gensler for Arper

Dezeen Showroom: architecture firm Gensler has designed Arper's Mixu chair, which can be mixed and matched with different materials and finishes to give interiors a personal touch.

The Mixu chair consists of three parts – a seat, backrest and base. Each part can be customised in a myriad of colour and texture options to create an individual product.

The Mixu chairs can be mixed and matched with recycled plastic, wood, fabric and leather components

Through the combination of post-industrial recycled plastic, FSC-certified wood, fabric and leather, the chair's minimal silhouette can be adapted into many different looks, ranging from playful to sophisticated.

Gensler initially set out to design a plastic chair that would suit a wide range of contract projects but noticed when conducting research interviews with interior designers that they were ambivalent about this product category.

"There was a strong consensus amongst the participants that a plastic chair lacked both a sense of craftsmanship and humanistic qualities," said Gensler product design director Daniel Stromborg.

It can create looks ranging from sophisticated to playful

"In response, we realised we needed to create a chair that offered interior designers a degree of authorship and a sense of the human touch," Stromborg continued.

"With this in mind, we pivoted from the original design brief and co-created a direction that focused upon accommodating customisation."

The chair is manufactured by Arper

As well as incorporating recycled materials, the product can be shipped disassembled to reduce its volume and carbon footprint. The chair is held together without glue or staples, allowing for easy replacement of parts and correct disposal or recycling.

Mixu is also available as a stool with a comfortable seat in the same size as the chair's.

Arper launches colourful Mixu seating collection by Gensler

Dezeen promotion: the Mixu collection by architecture and design consultants Gensler for furniture brand Arper offers multiple colour and material options.

Made up of stools and chairs, the Mixu range is designed to be versatile and fit any context.

Mixu is a new chair and stool collection

"Quiet in form and near-endless in possibilities, Mixu is a sustainable and versatile collection of chairs and stools that can be completely customised to suit the needs of any context, environment, or desire," said Arper.

Each chair is made from three parts: a base, seat and backrest. Users can pick the colour and finishes, tailoring Gensler's design to suit them.

The range comes in a variety of colours and finishes

"This three-part system can be personalised with myriad colour and texture combinations to create a silhouette whose softly rounded geometric curves, and minimal gesture creates a perfect canvas for material expression," said Arper.

The collection is available in a range of materials and finishes. The chair and stool seats come in fabric, leather, FSC certified wood and post-industrial recycled plastic.

The product's base is made from 70 per cent recycled steel, finished with a powder-based coat free from volatile organic compounds.

The chairs are made from three parts

"Seats can be combined with backrest options in a plastic, fabric, or leather and four-leg bases in either metal or FSC certified wood. A stool option with the same size seat as the chair offers generous comfort for hospitality or contract use," said Arper.

"The Mixu system is available in a range of material components for almost limitless design expressions. Playful or sophisticated, demure or vibrant, polished or plush, it's all in the selection."

"The Mixu system was designed with sustainability in mind and can be shipped disassembled to reduce its volume and carbon footprint."

The Mixu range is designed to be versatile and fit any context

The seat and backrest upholsteries – including the polyurethane foam padding – are attached to the chair without the need for staples or glue, allowing users to replace them if needed and extending the product's lifespan.

"Mixu can be completely disassembled for correct disposal, making this dynamic collection a materially conscious system throughout its life cycle," explained Arper.
