This week we lost avantgarde filmmaker Ken Jacobs, whose flickering experiments with film and light reinforced the lesson of variable media preservation: we keep things alive by keeping them moving.

Our beautiful Joan Mitchell painting has been a highlight of our collection since we bought it in 1974, the year after the artist painted it. But it needs a little TLC. Rather than send it off to be conserved in a lab, we're doing that live and in public. Read more about this cool project:

The Nature article (vol. 642, pp. 343–350, 2025) presents a method to physically apply digital inpainting using a bilayer pigment film. 5,612 losses in a 15th-century painting were restored in just 3.5 hours—66 times faster than traditional methods. This technique could help bring thousands of artworks back into public view.

MIT News: Have a damaged painting? Restore it in just hours with an AI-generated “mask”. “In a paper appearing today in the journal Nature, Alex Kachkine, a mechanical engineering graduate student at MIT, presents a new method he’s developed to physically apply a digital restoration directly onto an original painting. The restoration is printed on a very thin polymer film, in the form […]

Well this is a lovely start to the week!

My first ever book contribution is out there in the world: I wrote one of the case studies (Low Cost, High Fun) in this fabulous new #book about engaging young kids with #ArtConservation! :blob_book:

You can get it from here if you feel so inclined: routledge.com/Cultural-Heritag

#conservation #books #conservators #publishing #EarlyLearners

A square graphic with a blue sky and cloud background (very tranquil vibes) with a book in the middle: it's a colourful cover with paint strokes in various colours, and a large banner across the middle with the title.

It reads: "Conservation in Focus: Cultural Heritage Conservation for Early Learners: Outreach and Engagement with the Next Generation by Ellen Chase, Laura Hoffman, and Matthew Lasnoski"

Above the book is some black text reading: "Learn how to introduce young audiences to art conservation"

Below is more text reading: "Order before July 31 to save 20%. Use code SMA22." and a QR code for your convenience.

🎨 Art Alert! 🚫🧽 Caught on canvas: A cleaner ‘washing’ a painting with a mop! 😱 A curator’s nightmare unfolds in an art gallery… but don’t worry, it’s just a bit of fun! 😂 Remember, masterpieces need expert care—or step by step DIY cleaning here! 🛑✋ For art’s sake, let’s leave it to the pros. 🖼️💡 #ArtConservation #NoMopsAllowed #ProCleanersOnly
Having done some research, here are step-by-step instructions for cleaning it:
Dusting the Painting:
Begin by gently dusting the surface of the painting with a soft-bristled brush to remove any loose dust. It’s important to do this step very delicately to avoid scratching the paint.
Testing for Color Fastness:
Before using any liquid cleaners, test a small, inconspicuous area of the painting with a damp cotton swab to ensure that the colors do not run or fade.
Cleaning Solution:
Prepare a mild cleaning solution by mixing a small amount of olive oil-based soap with distilled water. Olive oil-based soaps are generally safe for cleaning paintings as they are gentle and do not contain harsh chemicals.
Cleaning the painting:
Dampen a soft, clean microfiber cloth with the soap solution and wring it out well so that it is only slightly damp.
Gently blot the painting’s surface without scrubbing. Start at the top and work your way down in small sections.
Rinsing:
After cleaning, go over the painting with a cloth dampened with just distilled water to remove any soap residue.
Drying:
