Sorry for lack of streams. I've been in the hospital due to balancing issues and wanted to give an update. I'm still in the hospital. Haven’t had an MRI yet, but docs think my B-12 deficiency could be part of the issue. I was taking supplements, but it may not have been enough. MRI still planned. Thanks for the love 💛

Taking Metformin for Type 2 diabetes? It could be depleting your Vitamin B12, which is essential for nerve health. Studies link low B12 levels to neuropathy, but B12 supplementation has been shown to improve nerve function and reduce pain. Learn more about the connection between Metformin and neuropathy!

'B12':

"What you need to know
• The clinical picture is the most important factor in assessing the significance of results of blood tests assessing cobalamin (B12) status […]
• Neurological symptoms resulting from B12 deficiency may take several months or even years to resolve completely
• Measuring serum biomarkers such as B12 or methylmalonic acid is neither helpful nor indicated in assessing or monitoring clinical improvement […]"

'Vitamin B12 deficiency in over 16s: diagnosis and management'

"This guideline covers recognising, diagnosing and managing vitamin B12 deficiency in people aged 16 and over, including deficiency caused by autoimmune gastritis. It also covers monitoring for gastric cancer in people with autoimmune gastritis."

nice.org.uk/guidance/ng239

Common symptoms and signs of vitamin B12 deficiency
- abnormal findings on a blood count such as anaemia or macrocytosis

- cognitive difficulties such as difficulty concentrating or short-term memory loss (sometimes described as 'brain fog'), which can also be symptoms of delirium or dementia

- eyesight problems related to optic nerve dysfunction:

* blurred vision

* optic atrophy

* visual field loss (scotoma)

- glossitis

- neurological or mobility problems related to peripheral neuropathy, or to central nervous system disease including myelopathy (spinal cord disease):

* balance issues and falls caused by impaired proprioception (the ability to sense movement, action and location) and linked to sensory ataxia (which may have been caused by spinal cord damage)

* impaired gait

* pins and needles or numbness (paraesthesia)

- symptoms or signs of anaemia that suggest iron treatment is not working properly during pregnancy or breastfeeding

- unexplained fatigue.

Recent article (Nov. 2023) on therapeutics for B12 deficiency:

Containing info for both patients and doctors.

Consider handing this to your GP in case you have trouble getting (the right amount of) intramuscular injections.

Oral B12 is not as efficacious as intramuscular B12 in improving symptoms when having a B12 malabsorption.

But B12 deficiency symptoms, biomarkers, exact treatment and self-injecting, are also discussed.

@thelad Clearly one shot is not enough, since you've gotten symptoms once again.

I suggest you go back to the loading dose:
b12deficiency.info/what-to-do-

After that, take a second look at your maintenance dose. It might be necessary to change it.

Me, I have to take an IM injection every 3 days, or I will get symptoms. I have had a very bad for years.

@CastlTrAstonDrs@med-mastodon.com Thank you for mentioning this great study!

My vision deteriorated for several months after my 2nd Covid infection, and my eyes hurt when watching from left to right. After reading this article and looking certain things up, I think it must have been neuritis optica!

Mind you, after my first infection I got all sorts of B12-deficiency symptoms, which made me suspect that there was a demyelinating process going on.

Guys, I have got my B12 supplements to use for 140 days that means it's for about half of 5 months use it every day. I have experienced a horrible day without it but after taking it everything almostly back to normal. As a vegan thanks to somebody who recommended me to buy some and told me to be more aware of this. Much love☺️

@smollestbunny I've had those too. External tremors, (jerks, twitches), spasms, and fierce electric shocks. Covid messes with electrolytes (magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium). Don't know why.

aggravated my B12-deficiency as well, so I upped that too but It was extra salt and lots of potassium that stopped the twitching and shocks. I already took the max amount of Mg. 1/n
