August 14, 1983: I dropped my backpack and carried my camera five hundred feet down a side trail to Rands View, a spot at the top of a high, sloping pasture where a remarkable view northward revealed the Taconic Range from Lions Head in Connecticut to Mount Everett in Massachusetts.

Looking down from a spot at the top of a high, sloping pasture at the large green valley below. Through a line of trees at the bottom of the pasture you can glimpse a lower pasture to your left and forest to your right. Beyond that is the large flattish valley, mostly wooded with strips of green fields and a few buildings visible. Beyond that is a forested mountain range rising hundreds of feet above the valley. Several rounded peaks are visible.

June 30, 1983: In the Virginia Blue Ridge, high atop a shoulder of a mountain called The Priest, not far from the 4063-foot summit, a spur ridge makes a perpendicular intersection with the main crest.

We a looking down from a mountainside to a large green valley hundreds of feet below. The air is hazy, the sky is completely overcast with low clouds and some fog below us. Our view is framed by forest on the bottom and left. The valley is relatively flat. Most of it is green pastures and farm fields, with also large strips of forest.

July 4, 1983: The first half-mile from the hut this morning climbed along the crest of the ridge forming the western rim of the ravine. This led to an interesting summit called Blackrock. It rose above the wooded ridge crest, a huge, barren mound of gray boulders smeared liberally with streaks of green paint.

It is very early in the morning. The clear sky has little color yet and is almost white. There is a lot of mist in the valleys below and mist and haze in the air. We are looking out from atop a mountain over the treetops on the mountainside below us into a maze of deep green mountains and hills and hollows below. With increasing distance, they take on a bluish tint from the haze and mist. The more distant mountains we can see are light blue gray ghosts.

May 29, 1983: I began hiking exactly at 11:00 beneath a heavy overcast, but no rain. My first three miles were the climb up Big Bald.

Walking through a large mountaintop meadow slanting gently upward to an unseen summit. There is a dense fog, visibility is only around 30 feet (about 9 meters) or so. The meadow is covered in lush green grass several inches in height. Several small shrubs rise from the meadow around us. Most have cranberry colored leaves, one has leaves of a dull pale olive and yellow. A few smaller shoots have bright green leaves.

Another field radio park session making coffee and making #CW #Morse contacts. I love the #WWFF life, it's what makes my radio operations fun. I met a nice German lady and talked about the old country. #AmateurRadio #backpacking

September 22, 1983: The ascent of Little Bigelow was gradual and the new trail well laid-out. The AT reached the ridgeline of the mountain and traversed a series of rocky knobs, several of which had open ledges. The sun had finally broken through, and the day had turned clear and beautiful. The haze was gone from the air, replaced by a crisp hint of chill.

We are standing on open light gray rock ledges atop a mountain looking over the treetops at a much loftier range of mountains arcing to our left as it stretches into the distance. Its slopes descend towards a valley on our left. There are some rocky patches along the ridge crests and a set of massive gray granite cliffs to the left of the crest as it ascends the nearest mountain. Everything else in the picture is covered with a lush forest consisting mostly of teal colored evergreens, with streaks of hardwoods turning red, gold and orange for autumn. The sky is clear and bright, but a bit hazy and whitewashed. The ledges are covered with pale green and dark green lichen. There are a few stunted spruce and leafy shrubs that have turned brick red or bright gold with autumn.

August 18, 1983: The highlight of my day occurred when I brilliantly attempted to cross a bog bridge at full speed in the rain. Bog bridges are wooden walkways built across muddy areas to prevent heavy hiker traffic from tearing up fragile wetlands. This one was constructed of split tree trunks with the flat side up.

It is raining. We are crossing a swampy area with water grasses, moss and shrubs growing from ground covered with several inches of standing water on low wooden bog bridges. The swamp is surrounded by the tree trunks of a dry land forest.

June 26, 1983: By the time I finished nursing my shins down the long descent to Jennings Creek, Alan had been there for about an hour. The bank of Jennings Creek was a nice temporary haven from the rigors of late-June backpacking.

Standing next to a body of water, in the shade of a large tree leaning out over the water, its leaves and branches taking up most of the image. Though the leaves we can see glimpses of a bright baby blue sky with puffy white clouds. Beneath them we see some shallows with lots of floating algae and lily pads. To the right along the shore are tall water grasses rustling in a soft breeze and then the start of the surrounding forest.
