These people are singing the Badger fight song, "On Wisconsin," in hopes of enticing a badger to emerge from this hole.

Not sure that's a good idea, to be honest! Fortunately for us, no badger emerged.

A half-dozen field trip goers poke around the south unit of the Namekagon Barrens state wildlife refuge, which has recently undergone a prescribed burn. One of the participants raises his arm as the group sings "On Wisconsin."

A cub (Meles meles) from my archive. If I recall correctly, this is the one who eventually came right up to where I was standing, so close that their nose made contact with my shoe! He or she beat a hasty retreat after picking up my human scent, but what a moment that was - one of many ‘close encounters of the furred kind’ I have experienced over the years.

Photo of a Eurasian Badger cub, foraging on the woodland floor. He or she has just reached a long-dead fallen branch, and their nose is just above it. The cub is close, so we are looking down on the animal at an angle; they are walking towards the bottom right corner of the image (so we see their back and their right side) but with their head turned to the left. This gives us a good view of the stripy face for which Badgers are well known; the head is white, but with a thick black stripe running up each side from the muzzle to just beyond the ears, enclose the ears (which have white tips) and the eyes. The body fur appears grey, due to the fact that each guard hair is whitish with a black band near the tip. The legs and feet however are black.
