@rozeboosje Why return to #BarterEconomy rather than #GiftEconomy ?

2025-03-22

PS that's not to say that a small local #BarterEconomy can't have a useful place alongside our #cash and #card ones. It sure can. Perhaps we should look at how we can leverage the benefits of each, and in what circumstances what mechanism is most beneficial to us.

I find it wrily funny when people try to convince others to use #CashOnly . I do understand the sentiment, but in the end the cash we all use is a #FiatCurrency . Its value is nominal only and that is one reason why we have to put up with things like #Inflation . But I never seen a compelling argument for a return to #BarterEconomy . Like it or not, we're part of a global economy, and friendly trade agreements are in everyone's best interest *glares at the #USA *

Things I have received in return for a #sourdough starter so far:
- Harvested rhubarb (two large bags), and later several rhubarb plants, dug up
- A crystal necklace and some essential oils
- A pound of coffee
- Homemade vanilla extract
- A half dozen wide mouth mason jars

@Nessiest @saucer they've already enslaved half of Streatham and Dulwich to make their bloody bracelets tho, the bottom's dropped out the market

@ogili @saucer good luck, they’re terrifying. But I hear they’ll trade for bracelets…

A fair trade, the bread faerie declares!

Traded a sourdough starter for vanilla extract.

(Also last week I traded a starter for a pound of coffee!)

One of my coworkers is finally getting eggs from her chickens! This means I can now trade bread for eggs!!!

A photo of a cardboard egg carton for half a dozen eggs. The carton is open and there are six brown eggs resting in it. The egg in the back right is a pink-brown and much lighter than the others, and the egg in the back middle has darker brown speckles.

Today I traded the last rosemary harvest for a coworker’s last sage harvest! We both rounded up the last of the herbs on Sunday before the freeze. #herbs #BarterEconomy #harvest

A photograph of several sprigs of rosemary drying on a towel in front of a toaster oven.A photo of a ziploc bag labeled “10/22/23 garden sage” filled with big sage leaves and a paper towel to control the moisture that is present in the bag. (Don’t worry, it went on the herb rack when I got home.)

Tristan da Cunha: The utopia that worked
When I was a teenage frequenter of espresso bars the arguments about 'anarchy - would it work' enlivened the wait for the bus home from school. I held my ground - 'yes it would' - till that bloody film Lord of the Flies came out. Then I was subject to derision and the glee
