We say in the Baul tradition that the male ego is much more fragile than the female. So we say, become strong, as strong as a woman. ... In a way, men are very afraid of women. Because women are very giving. They are ready to offer themselves. Because of this capacity of compassion and love, the motherly aspect, that already exists in women. It's a very special quality. Men have to seek it out in themselves.”
~ Parvathy Baul
So music is the way, stories are the medium and love is the message. Baul embraces Sufism, Kabir, Bhakti Movement and all other rebellions and experiments happening around. Experience is the key. And getting lost to find yourself is what Baul is.
Today, it is also a major performance art.
The Bauls are mystics. The Bauls are seekers. The Bauls are wanderers. The Bauls are storytellers. The Bauls are musicians. The Bauls are messengers.
Yes. Baul is both the art and the artist. Originated from Bengal (parts of India and Bangladesh), these people who rejected the idea of an established religion which has its hierarchies, traditions, rituals and dogmas, they sought the divine through music, through madness and through being lost in the art.
"Keep it to yourself! At least for a few days," is what the poet asks us in this age of display. Love has to grow inside the heart and the beloved has to be hidden from the world.
It, in a way, asks us to tune in and look do some soul seeking. Spend time and not lose touch with ourselves. And it points to feeling and cherishing love than showing it.
Hey people.
I haven't shared a huge treasure of beautiful things that I cherish on Social Networks. But this place somehow makes me open up. So here you go.
This is a Baul.
