"In general, I see copyright from two perspectives. Let's say someone earns $50 a month. Should they be expected to pay $250 for software? I don't think it's immoral for them to copy the software illegally and spend the equivalent of five months' salary on food. That kind of copyright infringement is morally acceptable. And it's immoral, not to mention stupid, to prosecute an infringer. In the case of Linux, who cares if someone doesn't comply with the GPL if they use the program for their own purposes? What I find immoral is when someone is looking for easy money, whether in the United States or in Africa. And even then, it's a matter of degree. Greed is never good."
And this is yet another reason why I respect this guy. It's not just about software; it's a philosophy of life worthy of emulation.
I watch most of the #Linus and Dirk shows but this weeks from #OSS #japan is a good one. It's hard to avoid mentions of #ai in the #tech world but Linus is at his pragmatic best here.
