Even if never described anywhere, it seems that each #BINAC word represent binary floating number with 30 bits for mantissa and 1 bit was reserved for sign. There no exponent. This can be represented as 10 octal numbers and sign. For example -7,000,000,000 represents -0.5

Early #Philadelphia #computer #history. Mom worked for S. Reid Warren (conservancy.umn.edu/handle/112); office was near Eckert's & Mauchly's @ Penn's Moore School. So many of my friends' folks worked for #UNIVAC (computerhistory.org/revolution).

This sign reminds me of one I'd see when out running near El Camino, in Mountain View (CA) area—was in front of a closed Oreck store (near San Antonio Center?); maybe the first Silicon Valley semiconductor plant? Plus ça change...

Zoomed out photo of a historic marker in Philadelphia and the surrounding landscape. The historic marker sign reads: "COMMERCIAL DIGITAL COMPUTER BIRTHPLACE — BINAC, the world's first commercial, electronic, stored program, digital computer passed verification tests here, at 3747 Ridge Ave., on April 7, 1949. Customer acceptance of UNIVAC I, the world's first open market, commercial computer, followed on March 30, 1951. J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly, co-inventors of ENIAC, led the development of both of these pioneering machines, which launched the commercial computer age." The sign is on a metal pole in a sidewalk. To the right of the sidewalk, where the historic event occurred, is a cyclone fence topped with barbed wire. There are cars parked behind the fence. The street to the left of the sidewalk is three lanes, one in either direction and a center turn lane. There is also a marked bicycle lane. Across the street are grave markers in historic Laurel Hill East Cemetery. It is sunny and the sky is deep blue. The shadows of a tree, the historic marker and a telephone pole lay diagonally across the street.Photo of a historic marker in Philadelphia: "COMMERCIAL DIGITAL COMPUTER BIRTHPLACE — BINAC, the world's first commercial, electronic, stored program, digital computer passed verification tests here, at 3747 Ridge Ave., on April 7, 1949.
