Statue of a person, Perseus, on top of an animal with a dog-like face that suppose to be a dragon.Description of the statue in English:

"Perseus Slaying the Dragon

Marble
Inv. Boboli no. 235

The sculptor Vincenzo Danti probably left this statue unfinished when he departed Florence definitively for Perugia in 1573. When Cosimo | died in 1574, the statue was taken to Pratolino and transformed into Perseus with the addition of the dragon. In 1773, Pietro Leopoldo ordered the statues removed from the villa for fear of the damage that would be caused by neglect. Therefore, the Perseus Slaying the Dragon and two other very important sculptures were moved to Boboli."Sign, in Italian, on an entrance to Boboli Gardens.

A sculpture and water fountain seen at Boboli Gardens, Florence, Italy on 14 Oct 2024. "Cracked Tyndareus" and Mostaccini Fountain. The fountain once acted as birdbaths to lure and catch birds, but was later outlawed in the gardens.

A large sculpture of a face, seen from the side. Large cracks run through the face.Description of the sculpture in English:

"Cracked Tyndareus
Igor Mitoraj (1944 - 2014)
Bronze

It was on the occasion of his 1999 solo exhibition that the artist chose to place this sculpture on the broad Chestnut Meadow (Prato dei Castagni). From the pantheon of ancient gods and heroes, Mitoraj chose to depict Tyndareus, king of Sparta, husband of Leda, father of Castor and Clytemnestra, and adoptive father of Helen and Pollux. His cracked, but powerful face embodies the contrasts in the artist’s poetic: fragments and recomposition, modern fragility and ancient dignity. Here Mitoraj draws us into his personal mythology where the ancient dialogues with the modern within the same ethical and aesthetic references.

Gift of the Atelier Mitoraj s.r.l"A series of cascading water features running down the side of the steps. The features are decorated with the heads of animals, through which water runs and falls on the feature below.Description of the fountain in English:

"Mostaccini Fountain

Pietra serena
Inv. Boboli no. 145

The Mostaccini Fountain consists of a “water chain” in the Ragnaia della Pace. The steps are decorated with masks spouting water that flows into the rock-carved channel below which serves as a birdbath and hence as a lure. The birds were captured in nets (called ragne) that were spread on the hedges and bushes of the mazes. Andrea di Michelangelo Ferrucci completed the fountain around 1622, but it fell into disuse in 1772 when hunting in the garden was outlawed."

Statues seen at Boboli Gardens, Florence, Italy on 14 Oct 2024: the Statue of Neptune and the Statue of Abundance.

The Fountain of Neptune. It shows Neptune holding his trident pointed at the water. Nepture is standing on a rock outcropping in the middle of the lake, with Niads and Tritons on the rocks below.Description of the Fountain of Neptune. It says in English:

"Fountain of Neptune

Marble and bronze, Inv. Boboli no. 88

According to Vasari, Cosimo de’ Medici commissioned Stoldo Lorenzi, a disciple of Tribolo, to create this sculpture group of Neptune, god of the sea armed with his trident. It is contemporary to the monumental statue of Neptune that Bartolomeo Ammannati sculpted for Piazza della Signoria. As opposed to that marble colossus, the Boboli group is a “neo-Hellenistic” arrangement with the elegant treatment of the bronze and the darting Naiads and Tritons.

Originally it stood on the "Madama Meadow" but its current position in the middle of the pool atop a rustic outcropping probably dates from the 1630s.

Statue of Neptune: copy after the original currently collocato nei depositi museal. in the museum storage facilities."The Statue of Abundance. It shows a woman holding aloft wheat stalks in her right hand.Description of the statue. It says in English:

"Statue of Abundance

Marble and bronze
Inventario Boboli n. 96

This statue was originally a portrait of Joanna of Austria, wife of Francesco | de’ Medici. Upon her death, it was transformed into an image of Abundance - or Peace, implemented thanks to the good government of the Grand Duke Ferdinando II, as evident from the inscription on the pedestal written by Francesco Rondinelli. In her left hand the woman holds a bronze sheaf of wheat stalks and in the right a cornucopia, symbolizing the prosperity that Florence and Tuscany enjoyed during the reign (1621-1670) of Ferdinando II, when the rest of Europe was tormented by wars and famines."

A visit to the Boboli Gardens in Florence, Italy on 14 Oct, 2024. A large Italian style garden, it gives a great view of the skyline of Florence. In one corner of the garden is Madama Grotto, set in a cave with sculptures of animals surrounded by artificial stalactites.

A sign describing the Boboli Gardens. It says, in English:

"The magnificent Boboli Gardens extend behind Palazzo Pitti. Starting in the mid-sixteenth century, the Medici were the first to be involved in the arrangements, creating a garden model that became an example and inspiration for many European courts.

The vast, evenly divided green area is a true outdoor museum filled with ancient, Renaissance, and modern statues, decorated with grottoes - first and foremost the famous one created by Bernardo Buontalenti - the spectacular Neptune and Oceanus fountains as well as many smaller but no less beautiful ones.

Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Lorraine and Savoia dynasties further enriched the garden expanding its boundaries from the old city walls as far as Porta Romana to the southwest.

The terraced area, where the eighteenth-century Kaffeehaus - a rare example of rococo architecture in Tuscany - and the Lemon House built by Zanobi del Rosso between 1777 and 1778 are located, is particularly fascinating.

A tour of the Boboli Gardens completes and complements your visit to the Pitti Palace to fully grasp the spirit of life at court and to enjoy the experience of a garden that is changing constantly while always and maintaining its traditions."A view of the skyline of Florence from Boboli Gardens. In the middle left is the dome of Florence Cathedral.Inside of Madama Grotto. It shows an archway in a cave with sculptures of various animals and artificial stalactites.A description of Madama Grotto. It says, in English:

"When work began in Boboli in the mid-sixteenth century, a small garden was created next to the walls of the Convento di San Giorgio. The Madama Grotto, the oldest in Boboli and one of the earliest examples of an artificial grotto, dates from the same period, 1553-1555. Built for Eleonora de Toledo, spouse of Cosimo I, under the direction of Davide Fortini, it gets its name from Maria Maddalena of Austria, Cosimo II's wife.

The faux rock facade is framed in stone and surmounted by a triangular tympanum. There are similar decorative elements inside, where spongy rock, punctuated by niches and architectural panels, covers the walls and the broad barrel vault decorated with grotesques painted by Bachiacca.

At the back, between faux stalactites, are sculptures of animals. Except for the goat in the centre by Baccio Bandinelli, they were all created by Giovanni di Paolo Fancelli, to whom we are also indebted for the oval basin with putti and Capricorns which was moved to the facade of Palazzo Pitti in 1696 and replaced with a copy. The marble floor is by Santi di Michele Buglioni.

The eponymous garden is in front of the Madama Grotto; it was originally used to raise dwarf fruit trees for Cosimo I, and today, along with the adjacent Jupiter Garden, it has beds of roses and peonies bounded by low box hedges."
