In den schattigen Grotten wirkt das Wasser fast leuchtend blau. Die intensive Färbung entsteht durch das Zusammenspiel von Lichtbrechung, Reflexion an den Kalkwänden und der Filterwirkung bestimmter Algen, die kurzwelliges Licht verstärken. Zusätzlich streuen feine Schwebstoffe das einfallende Sonnenlicht, wodurch sich die Farbwirkung je nach Wellenbewegung und Blickwinkel ständig verändert.

Diesmal bin ich nicht mit dem Packraft unterwegs, sondern lasse mich mit einem kleinen Motorboot entlang der Küste fahren. Von Wied iż-Żurrieq aus führen die Fischer zu den nahegelegenen Höhlen, die durch das Eindringen von Wasser in feine Kalkrisse entstanden sind. So wurde das Gestein über lange Zeit hinweg ausgewaschen und hohl geformt.

Der große Felsbogen von Blue Grotto markiert einen der eindrucksvollsten Eingänge des inseltypischen Karstsystems. Wind und Wellen haben über Jahrtausende das Kalkgestein ausgehöhlt und so eine Folge von Höhlen geschaffen, die je nach Tageslicht schimmernd blau erscheinen.

Featured image: The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was the first church built at Lourdes. Its construction was intended to serve as the chapel requested by the Blessed Virgin through her messages to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. Situated above a crypt, it overlooks the grotto of Massabielle cave and its rocky cliff upon which the basilica’s foundations are built. The construction of the church continued from 1862 to 1871 according to the plans of architect Hippolyte Durand. The basilica’s solemn consecration took place on 2 July 1876.
