When trees die, before their bark falls away, the layer between bark and wood is a place of safety and a source of food for many beetle and their larva, ants, and other arthropods. Some of them make these really interesting tunnels that become visible when the bark does fall off.

You don't hear much about borer these days. When I was a kid my Dad used to light borer bombs every time we moved to a new house, just in case.

Kmart are bringing back the borer, inside some of their bamboo products. This is not desirable so please check any wooden products purchased from Kmart. If you see sawdust beside a little hole, that means your borer has already exited and is looking for somewhere comfy to lay its eggs.
