After two days in the heated cubby, the same log dropped from 24% to 9% humidity, which is great.

But of course that's just the exposed end, which dries fastest. So I got curious and cut it in half. Inside: 15% -- generally the maximum recommended moisture level for firewood. Good to burn!

If you don't have a moisture meter, you can also toss a sample log onto some hot embers and observe. If it makes sizzling sounds or even seeps water at the ends it's far too moist.

If it ignites and burns well initially but then leaves a "core" that doesn't want to burn right, it still had too much moisture on the inside.

Same log as in the post above, now reading 9% after two days in the heated cubby.Same log again, now sawn into two roughly equal halves. The moisture meter rests on one of the freshly exposed sides reading 15%, just enough to get a ✔ from it. The other half stands next to it.

The heated cubby under the chimney next to the tile heater is perfect for finish drying firewood.

Helps a bit with keeping the air inside from getting too dry as well.

Split logs of firewood stuffed into four pockets under a chimney, next to a tile heater on the left. Some ceramic tiles and a cleanout for a disused kitchen cooker are on the right. The logs in the top three pocket are a different colour from the bottom.A moisture meter reading 12.5%.Thermal imaging view in false colours of the pockets. The logs, freshly brought in from outside are still cold at 4.5°C, the wall and back of the shelves is 45°C warm.Moisture meater reading 24%.

#Morningfog forms when a #night is colder than the day and the #dewpoint #temperature is reached, humidity is then 100 percent and #watervapor #condenses into #water. Water droplets that condense on ground vegetation form #morningdew. Fog and dew are important sources of #moisture for #animals/#plants. V. Carter et al. (2025) showed that this can also benefit #humans, using #fogcollectors around Alto Hospicio, Chile.

Thanks to the #moisture from the recent #storm system, relatively high #dewpoints for early #fall, and #calm #winds, the #Northland will be dealing with more dense #fog tonight and Tuesday morning.

It's been persistent of late, so you know what to do when driving.

#wxtooter #weather #wx #MNwx #WIwx #UPwx

As of 1:30 p.m. on Monday, September 22, 2025, the only Dense Fog Advisory in effect in the Northland is along the North Shore region. That will expand to cover the remaining areas along and near Lake Superior starting at 8 p.m. Monday. It will then expand to cover the rest of the region, minus the Upper Peninsula, starting at midnight Tuesday. It will then run through 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Visibility will be under one-quarter of a mile at times, so plan for a slower drive with more space between vehicles for your safety.

DENSE FOG LIKELY TONIGHT:

The #moisture from the recent #showers and #thunderstorms, along with #clearing skies and calm #winds, will lead to dense #fog across the #Northland tonight.

Plan for extra time, extra space, and low beams for the Wednesday morning commute to work and school.

#wxtooter #weather #wx #MNwx #WIwx

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2025, for Aitkin, Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Carlton, Cook, Douglas, Itasca, Lake, Pine, Sawyer, St. Louis, and Washburn counties. Visibility is likely to be below one-quarter of a mile at times Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.A model run of visibility levels in the Northland at 7 a.m. on September 10, 2025, shows most of the Northland with readings under one mile. This will mean a foggy commute to work and school, so plan for extra time, extra space between vehicles, and using the low beam headlights while driving.

Basics of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP):

1. THE HORIZONTAL MOMENTUM EQUATION:
\[
\frac{d\mathbf{V}}{dt} + f\hat{k} \times \mathbf{V} = -\nabla \phi + \frac{\sigma}{p_s} \frac{\partial \phi}{\partial \sigma} \nabla p_s + \mathbf{F}
\]

2. THE CONTINUITY EQUATION:
\[
\frac{\partial p_s}{\partial t} + \nabla \cdot (p_s \mathbf{V}) + \frac{\partial}{\partial \sigma}(p_s \dot{\sigma}) = 0
\]

3. THE THERMODYNAMIC ENERGY EQUATION:
\[
\frac{1}{R} \frac{d}{dt} \left[ \sigma \frac{\partial \phi}{\partial \sigma} \right] + \frac{RT}{C_p p} \left[ p_s \dot{\sigma} + \sigma\dot{p_s} \right] = -Q
\]

4. HYDROSTATIC EQUATION:
\[
\frac{\partial \phi}{\partial \sigma} = -\frac{RT_v}{\sigma}
\]

5. SURFACE PRESSURE TENDENCY EQUATION:
\[\displaystyle
\frac{\partial p_s}{\partial t} = -\int_{0}^{1} \nabla\cdot (p_s \mathbf{V}) \, d\sigma
\]

6. MOISTURE EQUATION:
\[\displaystyle
\frac{\partial}{\partial t} (p_s q) + \nabla\cdot (p_s q \mathbf{V}) + \frac{\partial}{\partial \sigma} (p_s q \dot{\sigma}) = p_s S
\]

The six primary unknowns are: \(\mathbf{V}\) (horizontal wind velocity), \(p_s\) (surface pressure), \(T\) (temperature), \(q\) (specific humidity or moisture), \(\phi\) (geopotential), and \(\dot{\sigma}\) (sigma velocity or vertical velocity in \(\sigma\)-coordinates).
