Borrowed scenery (借景 'shakkei') gardens make use of background features and external landscapes as creative elements.

Many shakkei gardens in Kyōto have been lost over time due to urban development, or even re-landscaping (as may be the case with Ryōan-ji's famous zen garden!).

The garden of Shoden-ji is one of many temples in Kyoto to use Mt Hiei as borrowed scenery. The garden of Murin-an draws the peaks of Higashiyama into its grounds to create an expansive feeling from the limited space. It is thought that the famous dry landscape garden at Ryoan-ji originally made use of borrowed scenery, but over time trees grew and obscured the view. The garden at Heian Jingu.

Although there is no clear evidence, many believe the temple's garden was created by famed artist Kobori Enshū (小堀遠州 1579-1647).

In 1935 Shigemori Mirei (重森三玲) discovered the original garden had been hidden by an ugly arrangement of rocks added in the Meiji period.

Using a 7-5-3 pattern of trimmed azalea (ツツジ) bushes in the place of rocks, Mirei revived the garden. It is extremely unusual to see a Zen garden without any rocks at all.

Shoden-ji, like Entsu-ji, uses Mt Hiei as borrowed scenery. The garden at Murin-an, with Higashiyama as backdrop. The garden narrows as it stretches from the house, cleverly drawing the mountains in to the garden. There is some suggestion that originally Ryoan-ji's famous garden used borrowed scenery. The current vegetation (and wall) was absent, giving a view of the pond and distant mountains. The garden at Heian Jingu.

🌿PERSIMMON PALACE🌄

Entsū-ji (円通寺) was once surrounded by such an abundance of persimmon trees and azalea bushes that in past times it was nicknamed 'Kaki-no-dera' (柿の寺) and 'Tsutsuji-no-dera' (ツツジの寺).
The temple is now better known for its 'borrowed scenery' garden.

Entsu-ji is famed for its 'borrowed scenery' garden.
Mt Hiei is framed by trees, and 'drawn in' to the garden. In the past Entsu-ji was known as the 'palace of persimmons' and the 'temple of azalea', thanks to the orchards and flowers that grew here.Entsu-ji began life as a palace constructed by Emperor Go-Mizunoo.Early autumn at Entsu-ji.

As green comet C/2022 E3 passes overhead, we're releasing 'Green: Multispecies Entanglings', a reader from FoAM's Anarchive. 🌱 Planted firmly on the Earth, contributors explore how we relate to the plants, animals, landscapes, and other beings with whom we share our planet. 🌍 Blending shades of green to paint possible futures where gardening and gathering, fieldwork and storytelling, contemplation and experimentation foster reciprocal relationships with the living world. Nobody walks the path alone. 🗺️
