Six months into my #careerBreak, neither boredom nor exhaustion are setting in. I'm having a great time away from work, balancing commitments with relaxation and introspection.

This is probably the most #coding I’ve done since starting my #careerBreak almost 4 months ago, and I did so via #raspberryPiConnect on an iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard. Didn’t work great; Safari kept interrupting the connection in the tab that had my remote terminal session.

Three months into my #careerBreak, I’m deprogramming from work and keeping my body and mind busy as I learn new skills. So far, feeling good.

Yup, it happened. Over nineteen months and two eclipses later and the career break is officially behind me. I still can’t believe that time came and went so quickly, but I can say honestly that I’m excited to start something new.

During my #careerBreak, to make up for the lack of a regular paycheck, I’ve been building a fixed-income redemption ladder, using CDs and bonds. So far, the stability has been worth the slight time investment.

My 9-Month Career Break in 2024: Reflections on Growth, Risks, and Rewards

Now that 2024 has wrapped up and we’re already a few weeks into 2025, I’d like to share a chapter of my life I haven’t discussed publicly before: last year, I spent nine months on a self-imposed career break. For someone who had been working almost nonstop for nine years—sometimes more than 40 hours a week—it was both a bold decision and a transformative experience. This sabbatical significantly boosted my life satisfaction without derailing my career. If anything, it enhanced […]

In the first month of my #careerBreak, I'm learning that "decumulating" my net worth is okay. Saving money makes that possible, but saving money is not the goal.

I quit my job at AWS, and I don't have another one lined up. Time for a #careerBreak, my first time in decades with more than a month between commitments. Here's to a happier and healthier future.

As I'm easing into a proper #JobSearch, one of the most demoralizing things I'm seeing on places like LinkedIn is folks, currently unemployed and searching for work, trying to build a "brand". I'm not talking organic posts built on slow thought and inspiration, but forced writing that has content mill vibes.

After over a year long #CareerBreak, seeing this, all I can think is: dear god I don't have it in me to become a business bro influencer, and if that's what it takes, I'm in trouble...

Somehow, despite running a blog (sometimes quite intermittently) for the past twenty years, I never knew August 31st was World Blog Day. So it seemed as good a day as any to finally write a long-overdue post looking back on this break I’ve been on, and looking forward to what comes next.

Well, six of twenty hours of manual driving lessons done (plus a bit of in-between practice) and the instructor has only had to use the “uhoh” break once, and only because I almost blew through a yield sign that was hidden behind a tree. Progress!

If I’m asked what I accomplished on my break, the first thing I’ll list is using my iFixit kit to repair the shoulder buttons on my old Nintendo DS Lite (easy repair, corroded contacts in the micro switches). Why? Because it was there.

So I’ve been plugging away at a little side project for kicks. I haven’t written code for a month, now, due to other issues and distractions but I have been _thinking_ about it, and it occurs to me how novel that is: without the pressure of deadlines I can actually spend time thinking about the problem, ensuring I build the right thing first, without the pressure to deliver the fast wrong answer.

Napadlo mě, že bych si udělal roční #careerbreak. Jaký pak může být návrat do procesu? A co vlastně dělat v mezičase, co člověka posune dál? Nemáte s tím někdo zkušenost?
