Super exciting to present at #EverythingOpen today with Rebecca Barber from ANU! Also what an awesome day for #GLAM sessions and some really interesting discussions around data ownership and privacy.

More fulsome notes to come, but these are the summary ~vibes of each session:

🔑 Keynote: “Peak Text: AI and the Golden Age of Libraries and Archives” by Keir Winesmith, National Film and Sound Archive of Australia
😎 Vibe: A galvanising affirmation of serving the public good.

🎙️Session: “I accidentally became a FOSS maintainer and all I got was this lousy insight into librarianship” by @hugh, La Trobe University
😎 Vibe: A warm hug for the weary soul.

🎙️Session: “A university library’s journey in making tech training resources FAIR” by Stéphane Guillou, The University of Queensland
😎 Vibe: Quietly leading with practical expertise.

🎙️Session: ”How one ISO standard led the way for national library infrastructure” by @saera, CAVAL
😎 Vibe: Actively equitable and gets the thing done.

🎙️ Session: “My degoogled life” by Joshua Hesketh, Grafana Labs
😎 Vibe: Seriously amused and terrifyingly pragmatic.

Check out the schedule and keep an eye out for the recordings! lnkd.in/g3qzqsSd

Hung out with these awe-inspiring librarians today to chat about our favourite thing for an hour at #National24 (ALIA National), celebrating the #OER movement in Australasia and strategising our way around the challenges still ahead.

Katy Henry (CAUL) did an exceptional job facilitating our discussion while Sarah McQuillen discussed UniSA’s textbook minimisation project and navigating the barriers to integrating OER into course materials, Angie Williamson shared Deakin’s approach to ensuring quality and reliability in OER publishing, and Jennifer Hurley (RMIT) gave guidance on the institutional supports required to build sustainable open educational practice.

I spoke about measuring impact beyond cost, referring to Sarah Lambert’s insightful work on the 3Rs of social justice.

What a wonderful start to the conference! I can’t wait to dive into the other Open Ed sessions throughout the week 🤩 And am particularly keen to check out Emilia (emi-lee-ah) Bell’s session tomorrow giving us a glimpse into their PhD research “Open to diplomacy? Libraries, knowledge, and global challenges”.

P.S. Excited speaker landyard pic included because aahhh! What a vibe today!

Remember folx: there is no such thing as a free lunch. These 'read and publish' agreements are funded by massive pre-paid contributions from libraries. We pay subscriptions AND pre-paid publishing fees. #CAUL #openaccess

Thank you to #CAUL (Council of Australian University Librarians) for their hard work arranging Read and Publish agreements with publishers - meaning we can publish #OpenAccess for free! Librarians are heroes.

My University of Melbourne library blog post on our 2023 #OpenAccess publishing agreements is now live. It aims to not just highlight our new and continuing agreements, most of which are #ReadAndPublish agreements negotiated by #CAUL, but to contextualise these alongside other pathways to open access, including open access journals (many of which don't charge APCs), Subscribe to Open (S2O) journals, and our institutional repository.
