The Rt. Hon. A. Deakin [between 1900 and 1908]

1 photographic print (postcard). | Alfred Deakin, head-and-shoulders portrait, facing front.

The image is a black-and-white portrait photograph of a man, likely from the late 19th or early 20th century, judging by the style of clothing and the photographic quality. The man has a full beard and mustache, and his hair is graying. He is dressed in formal attire, which includes a suit with a high collar and a tie. The background of the photograph is plain and dark, which helps to highlight the subject. The photograph is framed with a white border, and there is text at the bottom that reads, "THE RT. HON. A DEAKIN." Below that, it says "ROTARY PHOTO E.C." and "2466 A," which likely refers to a catalog or identification number for the photograph. The overall tone of the image conveys a sense of formality and respectability.

Exclusive Brethren ‘volunteers’ were everywhere during the 2025 federal election campaign. At our polling booth in #Deakin it felt like there were more shiny young white men offering Lib how to vote cards than there were voters. And Sukkar corflutes every couple of meters along the path. It was ridiculous. Plus the candidate of course, who as he always does ignored my greeting & looked over my head to speak to my husband. A charming bunch.

Why isn’t #Deakin , which is currently held by the Libs on a margin of 0.2%, recognised with more than a mention in this list of key electorates?

Our representative has distinguished himself repeatedly by his willingness to perform all manner of dirty work in support of his party, without regard to his personal reputation or whatever ethics he may have, while maintaining a facade of smarmy respectability (reminds me wierdly of George Pell in this respect). As I recall, Sukkar won last time by something like 304 votes?

Surely the good people of Deakin can do better this time.

Like many voters I am bitterly disappointed in the Albanese government for maintaining our political ‘normal’ of plunder the planet, enrich the wealthy, screw the poor, when they could have empowered the wealth of talent within their ranks to develop & implement a responsible policy agenda. But I would NEVER preference the Libs 🤡🎪🎡 ahead of Labor. #AusPol

Hung out with these awe-inspiring librarians today to chat about our favourite thing for an hour at #National24 (ALIA National), celebrating the #OER movement in Australasia and strategising our way around the challenges still ahead.

Katy Henry (CAUL) did an exceptional job facilitating our discussion while Sarah McQuillen discussed UniSA’s textbook minimisation project and navigating the barriers to integrating OER into course materials, Angie Williamson shared Deakin’s approach to ensuring quality and reliability in OER publishing, and Jennifer Hurley (RMIT) gave guidance on the institutional supports required to build sustainable open educational practice.

I spoke about measuring impact beyond cost, referring to Sarah Lambert’s insightful work on the 3Rs of social justice.

What a wonderful start to the conference! I can’t wait to dive into the other Open Ed sessions throughout the week 🤩 And am particularly keen to check out Emilia (emi-lee-ah) Bell’s session tomorrow giving us a glimpse into their PhD research “Open to diplomacy? Libraries, knowledge, and global challenges”.

P.S. Excited speaker landyard pic included because aahhh! What a vibe today!

In a positive outlook for 2024, #universities across #Canada are introducing more #PlantBased or #vegan food options. Many of the universities have stated this is due to ongoing demand from students for more variety - and a larger push for more sustainable practices.

A number of universities are taking the lead, notably:

-#WesternUniversity. The university set a goal of having a 40 per cent plant-based menu at all dining halls by the new year, but it hit the target — and at some points even surpassed it — this year. A fully vegan outlet will open in 2024, and the school wants to reach a 50 per cent target in 2025.
-#TheUniversityOfBritishColumbia. 55 per cent of the food in dining halls is plant-based, and the Vancouver school hopes to reach a goal of 80 per cent by 2025.
-#ConcordiaUniversity in Montreal plans to reduce its purchase of meat, dairy and eggs by 30 per cent.
-#DalhousieUniversity in Halifax aims to offer a menu with at least 50 per cent plant-based food options by 2030.
-#UniversityOfToronto. Plant-based options represented less than half of the universities food services offerings two years ago, but now account for 61 per cent.

Vegan Australia is advocating for Australian universities* to gain inspiration from these progressive examples, and embrace a fully vegan food system for the benefit of the planet, humanity, and for the animals.

Here's all the #Deakin #NTEU #Strike stuff I was in. Thank you to everyone who asked for my opinion on this!

I did a 3-minute video explaining why I was taking strike action here: youtu.be/jIBunuMifnk

I was in the Geelong Advertiser talking about how Deakin treats it staff: geelongadvertiser.com.au/geelo

That is paywalled so the parts of the article involving me are attached (with alt-text).

I was on @3CRMelbourne's @slacker_radio talking with @ULTROS_PROFESSIONAL and @beef_skeleton about Deakin, their treatment of staff, and why we were striking. That starts from about 10 minutes here: omny.fm/shows/the-suwa-show-sq

TItle: Deakin University staff go on 24-hour NTEU-backed strike over Enterprise Agreement

Lede: A Deakin worker has revealed what it’s like for staff amid EA discussions, after a 24-hour strike was held on Thursday.

Author: Michaela Meade

Text:

A Deakin worker has revealed the hurt, anger, and frustration he feels with his employer amid stalled Enterprise Agreement negotiations leading to a 24-hour strike on Thursday.

Eric Stacey is a full-time senior system administrator at Deakin’s Waterfront campus, and was among the workers involved in a strike this week.

It was the first time in a decade Deakin workers had elected to go on a 24-hour strike.

Mr Stacey, 41, said he had worked at the university collectively for 17 years, and had seen good people leave because of pay and work conditions.

He said what Deakin was offering staff in the EA was “substandard”.Picture is of striking staff standing together with signs and placards, posing for the camera.

Text:

“They’re not even close to the cost of living increases that we’re all getting right now,” Mr Stacey said.

“It’s about pay, yes, but it’s also about some of things that they’ve been doing to us, or they’re trying to do now in this new educational world, where working from home is more usual standard … they’re trying to stop that.

“There’s multiple things beyond pay that they are attacking us on.”

Mr Stacey said staff were tired and burnt out from years of the same situation.

He said the Covid-19 pandemic and the restructure the university went through had compounded those feelings.

“The staff are scared that another restructure might come,” he said.Text: “They’re scared they don’t have a secure future with Deakin.

“It hurts, it’s frustrating, it’s disappointing.”

Mr Stacey said despite the difficulties staff were currently facing, the majority were looking to see the university succeed, especially with big developments like the India campus in the works.

But he said this needed to happen alongside staff being paid well for a reasonable workload.

“It’s a bad time right now, but we are optimistic that it will improve,” he said.

In a bargaining update video from July 14, NTEU Deakin branch president Piper Rodd said “significant” progress was being made in recent weeks.

This morning I recorded a video giving the reason I'm going on #strike at #Deakin with the #NTEU tomorrow. This arvo I did an interview with the Geelong Addy. Tomorrow I speak at the rally. You're going to be seeing quite a bit of me if you follow the strike tomorrow.

There are a lot of casual staff that are striking with us and not getting paid what they would be (none of us are, but they're in an even worse position!). Please donate to the strike fund to help them recoup their lost wages!

here's the video where I explain why I'm striking tomorrow:

Today I'm taking strike action at #Deakin University. Deakin's offered sub-standard EA, which voting opens up for today, is an insult to staff, and shows how poorly they understand what is happening at Deakin.

For more information, see these:

I also wrote a blog post about how Deakin keeps crying poor while making profits and using that as an excuse to destroy the staff and culture at the university. No more.

If you're at #Deakin, I highly encourage you to vote NO on their shitty offer. Deakin has ruined us for too long while making profits. The scales need to be balanced.

Healthy eating is not 'more expensive' for the typical Aussie metro area. It's cheaper. Wholefood vegan diets are even cheaper still (this research is based on the so-called 'Planetary Health Diet' which still trashes the environment with fish and meat).
